Ally Suhre joined rare company in Edwardsville girls golf history while leading the Tigers to an individual and team championship sweep at the Belleville West Invitational on Aug. 21 at Orchards Golf Course.
Suhre fired a career-best 5-under-par 66 to win the tournament by five strokes over O’Fallon’s Zoey Ficken, who shot an even-par 71.
By breaking 70, Suhre became only the third golfer in EHS history to shoot in the 60s multiple times. She joined Nicole Johnson, Rachel Johnson and Marissa Cook in that group. Nicole Johnson accomplished the feat seven times and owns the program record for lowest round relative to par with a 6-under 66. Rachel Johnson did it four times, while Cook did it twice.
Suhre’s victory was her second of the season. She also won the Madison County Tournament after shooting a 2-under 69.
She finished with six birdies, including three on each side of the course. She shot a 2-under 35 on the front nine and a 3-under 33 on the back nine.
Suhre became the fourth Tiger to win the tournament, joining Rachel Johnson, Nicole Johnson and Riley Lewis.
Carlyle’s Ava Meyer placed third at 5-over 76, followed by Edwardsville’s Kylie Lintker at 6-over 77 and Breese Central’s Maya Kampwerth at 8-over 79. The top five came from a field of 80 golfers.
With Suhre and Lintker finishing in the top four, the Tigers won the team title with a 313. O’Fallon was second at 322, followed by Mater Dei at 345.
Playing out of the No. 4 spot in Edwardsville’s lineup, Lintker rebounded from a 4-over 39 on the front nine with a 2-over 38 on the back. Both of her birdies came on the back nine, although she also recorded a double bogey on No. 18.
Edwardsville also counted an 83 from Emerson Gusewelle and an 87 from Alexis Hunt. Gusewelle finished ninth individually, while Hunt placed 18th.
Father McGivney finished 12th in the 13-team field with a 433. The Griffins counted scores from Kathryn Krueper, Libby Horton, Reese Reinhardt and Audrey Lavelle.
