A stabbing injury almost forced World No.18 Robert MacIntyre to miss out on this week’s Tour Championship. Interestingly, the Scot suffered it while playing another sport.
MacIntyre withdrew from the FedEx St Jude Championship due to the lingering injury. As a result, he dropped to No. 36 in the season-long FedEx Cup rankings. A week later at the BMW Championship, the Scotsman spoke about the injury.
“I didn’t know what it was,” MacIntyre said. “I’ve been getting serious pain when I squat down to read a putt and stuff. After a long day’s practice session, and the way I’ve been playing lately I’ve been putting in long hours.”

MacIntyre revealed the pain originated from a Baker’s cyst in the back of his right knee. The Oban man got hold of it while playing shinty, which he often does back in his hometown.
To qualify for the Tour Championship, MacIntyre needed a top 30 at the BMW Championship.
Playing through the pain, the Scot delivered a final-round 5-under 65 to come tied for seventh. He will now head to East Lake.
MacIntyre did not forget to give due credit to the PGA Tour’s on-site physio and medical staff.
“On Thursday afternoon, it was like someone was stabbing me in the bottom of my hamstring,” added MacIntyre, as reported by Bunkered’s John Turnbull. “So the guys on the truck have done a great job this week in getting me feeling like I can play, so I can’t thank them enough.”
MacIntyre will now tee off at his third consecutive Tour Championship.
The World No.18 will need to play through the injury in hopes of securing his first PGA Tour win in two years.
Scottie Scheffler is also under the weather
Ahead of the Tour Championship, World No.1 Scottie Scheffler is battling hand, foot and mouth disease. In fact, he played the BMW Championship with the disease.
“I got the hand, foot, mouth, so you get blisters on your hands and in your throat and on your feet,” said Scheffler, as per Bunkered’s John Turnbull.
Scheffler was coming off a massive eight-stroke victory at the FedEx St. Jude Championship. As a result, he wanted to keep the momentum going and opted not to withdraw.
The World No.1 struggled in the opening round, scoring a 72. He came into contention with a 65 on Friday. With rounds of 68 on the weekend, Scheffler could only manage a tied-for-12th finish.
Scheffler will hope to recover before the Tour Championship and give himself the best chance to win a second FedEx Cup.
