Kirk Cameron Warns Taylor Swift Is ‘Actually Discipling’ Millions of Young People

Actor and evangelist Kirk Cameron praised Taylor Swift’s historic success while warning that her massive influence over young people comes with a serious responsibility.

Swift, 36, was recently announced as the youngest person ever inducted into the Nashville Songwriters Hall of Fame’s contemporary songwriter/artist category. Swift has won 14 Grammys over the course of her career and has sold more than 270 million records worldwide. She is also the highest-grossing live music artist of all time. Swift’s most recent tour, “The Eras Tour,” grossed more than $2 billon in ticket sales.

The “Left Behind” actor used the achievement to discuss Swift’s influence on young women and urged Christians to pray that she comes to faith in Jesus Christ.

“Whether you like Taylor Swift or not, her accomplishment is pretty remarkable,” Cameron said. “I mean she is clearly talented. She’s a gifted songwriter, many would say she’s a brilliant businesswoman, and a performer who has connected with her audience in a way that has them wearing her t-shirts everywhere.”

“And few entertainers have ever reached that level of success and influence,” he added. However, Cameron said that influence is also what concerns him.

Cameron argued that Swift’s influence goes far beyond entertainment because millions of young women look to her when forming their views about life and relationships.

“And that’s where my celebration turns into concern. Because when you’re influencing millions and millions of young people, you’re doing more than just entertaining them. You’re actually discipling them,” Cameron said. “You’re showing them what is good. You’re telling them what’s true. You’re telling them what’s normal and desirable and worth pursuing.”

Cameron then criticized some of the themes found in Swift’s music and performances.

“Over the years, some of her songwriting and her performances have increasingly included themes, imagery, and lyrics that celebrate or normalize sexual immorality, vulgarity, ideas of revenge, drunkenness, bitterness, and rebellion against biblical morality,” he said.

Cameron explained that he wasn’t accusing every Swift song of containing those messages.

“Now, I’m not saying that every Taylor Swift song does this. It doesn’t,” he said. “But when one of the most influential women on earth, and she is, packages those ideas inside of catchy songs, spectacular concerts, clever lyrics, and a spectacularly attractive personality to her fans, they become very powerful in shaping hearts and minds.”

Cameron said that is an example of how culture can shape the beliefs of children.
