We made it, we really did. The Tour Championship is here, which means there’s $40 million in prize purse up for grabs, a $10-million winning check and a chance to be named FedEx Cup champion.
No more staggered starting. Nothing. All 30 men start at even par and play a traditional 72-hole golf tournament. Lowest score wins. It’s that simple.
Scottie Sheffler, of course, enters the Tour Championship ranked first in FedEx Cup standings, just he has for the fifth consecutive year. But again, that gets him nothing at East Lake.
Last week at the BMW Championship, three men moved into the top 30, meaning three men were booted from that as well. Gary Woodland, Patrick Cantlay and Robert MacIntyre were the ones who qualified. Kurt Kitayama, Rickie Fowler and Bud Cauley saw their seasons end abruptly.
Tommy Fleetwood is the defending champion, having won his first PGA Tour title in Atlanta a year ago. Wyndham Clark won last week in St. Louis. To make this week feel like a winner-take-all for the PGA Tour Player of the Year honors between him and Scheffler. But who knows?
