What is the Tour Championship?

For the second year running, there’s no staggered start at East Lake: every player in the field began the week level, meaning the winner of the tournament, over four rounds of stroke play, is also crowned FedExCup champion. That’s a change from the format used before 2025, when a player’s position in the standings bought them a head start on the leaderboard.

This week’s $40 million purse is separate from the $100 million FedExCup bonus pool, which was already distributed based on the season-long standings after the BMW Championship, with Scottie Scheffler earning the largest share for finishing No. 1. What’s left to decide at East Lake is the trophy itself, and every player in the field still has an equal shot at it.

The story so far

Min Woo Lee set the pace on Thursday with a bogey-free 8-under 62 in his Tour Championship debut, tying his career-low round on the PGA Tour. He led Viktor Hovland, Collin Morikawa and Chris Gotterup by two shots, with Scottie Scheffler a further shot back after a 5-under 65 that included a birdie-birdie finish.

Rory McIlroy, chasing a record-extending fourth FedExCup title, had a mixed start, falling to two-over early before recovering to post a 2-under round. Adam Scott, back at East Lake after missing the entire 2025 postseason, sat just outside the top 10 alongside Tommy Fleetwood, who arrived looking to become the first player to defend a Tour Championship title.

Wyndham Clark comes into the week in the form of his life, having won the BMW Championship for his third title of the 2026 season, a result that moved him to No. 3 in the FedExCup standings. Scheffler, meanwhile, enters as the man to beat: he’s ranked FedExCup No. 1 for a fifth consecutive season and is chasing his second FedExCup title after winning in 2024.

With every player starting level and no cut across the four rounds, the FedExCup race stays wide open until the final putt drops on Sunday.
