Scottie Scheffler has officially surpassed Tiger Woods as the PGA Tour’s career earnings leader.
With a win at the 2026 Tour Championship, Scheffler brought his career earnings to $130,390,661. The Highland Park product needed $608,505 to catch Woods on the list. Scheffler earned $10 million with a first-place finish in the Tour Championship.
Woods has earned $120,999,166 throughout his PGA Tour career. He held the top spot on the Tour’s career earnings list since his runner-up finish at Torrey Pines on Feb. 13, 2000.
This year’s Tour Championship had a $40 million purse. Scheffler earned $10 million as the first-place finisher, while Viktor Hovland earned $5 million in second place and Ryan Gerard earned $3,705,000 in third.
Once adjusted for inflation, Woods still holds a sizable advantage over Scheffler in career PGA Tour earnings. Woods’ career earnings amount to about $207 million in today’s dollars, compared with $141 million for Scheffler.
Prize money began climbing rapidly with the Woods’ rise and his immense popularity, then surged again with the arrival of LIV Golf.
Here’s a look at how the prize money has escalated at one of the PGA’s biggest events. Woods has won four PGA Championships, while Scheffler has won one. But in unadjusted earnings, Woods’ four victories only netted around $595,000 more than Scheffler’s single victory.
Purses have come a long way since the early days of Jack Nicklaus’ career. When Nicklaus won the 1962 U.S. Open at Oakmont Country Club, he took home $17,500 — including a $15,000 winner’s share and a $2,500 playoff bonus from gate receipts after he defeated Arnold Palmer in a playoff.
Nicklaus competed in 584 official PGA Tour events during his legendary career, making the cut in 495. Woods has played 378 official PGA Tour events, making 339 cuts. Scottie Scheffler has competed in 170 PGA Tour events and made the cut in 150 of them.
