MYRTLE BEACH, SC (WMBF) – A major sporting event is bringing a significant financial boost to businesses along the Grand Strand.
The Myrtle Beach World Amateur Handicap Championship is underway this week, drawing thousands of visitors to the area.
Organizers say about 3,000 players representing all 50 states and over 20 countries have traveled to the Grand Strand to compete on more than 50 local golf courses.
Golf courses and businesses say the influx of players and their families provides a massive economic boost just as the peak summer tourism season winds down.
“It’s definitely good,” Shawn Burns, head golf professional at Myrtlewood Golf Club, said. “I mean, obviously huge for retail and then also just the golf itself definitely gives us a little boost that we need”
For many business owners, the timing of the tournament is critical. Late August and early September typically mark a slow transition period for coastal tourism, making the tournament’s timing highly beneficial.
“Kind of awesome to end the season with a bang, kind of have everyone come out and have a good time,” Burns said.
The tournament runs through Friday, culminating in a championship round where multiple champions will be crowned.
