FAT GUY CORNER
Can we all agree that college football on television last Saturday was so refreshing? How nice was it to sit down and watch a little college football? I ask, can we also agree that the NFL preseason worthless football games finally being over with is a true blessing too? I think those three games are so darn worthless and wish they would just go away. I mean the NFL has cut down their rosters to 53 players and now the games are the real deal. I am excited for both college and NFL to fire up and let the season begin for both. I want to touch on golf and a little baseball this week. Oh, let’s make a few predictions on Michigan and Michigan State games this weekend too.
The winner of the Tour Championship was Scottie Scheffler. The win by Scottie was his second FedEx Cup win in three years. The back nine Scottie just flat out pulled away from Viktor Hovland for a sweet three stroke win. I find it incredible that at the beginning of the day he was three shots behind Hovland. I can absolutely say Scottie Scheffler is one tough customer on the PGA Tour. I feel as though every time he is on the golf course he is the favorite to win. I say, congrats Scottie on a great year, and it’s a joy to watch you play golf every weekend.
I just will briefly touch on what a waste of a summer it was at Comerica Park by the worthless Detroit Tigers. I think they are the biggest chumps in MLB baseball this season. I factor in last year’s September swoon and this year’s August swoon as proof the Tigers are nothing but chumps on the ball diamond. I am headed to the game Sunday in Cleveland, and if I didn’t have great seats and good friends meeting me I would stay home. I have zero interest the rest of the season for the Detroit Meowing Kittens!
The college football season for the State of Michigan begins this weekend. I want to say congrats on Eastern Michigan winning their home opener last weekend. The Michigan State Spartans will be at home against the Toledo Rockets from the MAC. The Spartans under new coach Pat Fitzgerald would love to get off to a 1-0 start to the season. I can tell you the boys from Vegas have installed the Spartans as 10-point favorites. The Toledo Rockets are usually a pretty sound football team, so MSU better be ready for a battle on the gridiron. The kickoff is set for Friday night at 8 p.m. I am very curious to see what this MSU team looks like here in 2026. The Fat Guy sees a low scoring affair in this contest. The Fat Guy prediction: Green and White 20 and Rockets not in Flight 13.
The Michigan Wolverines will take on a MAC opponent also this weekend in the Western Michigan football team. The Wolverines have been installed as four touchdown favorites over Western Michigan. The Wolverines will be taking the field under new coach Kyle Whittingham for the first time in the Big House. The kickoff is set for Saturday night on NBC at 7:30 p.m. I think numerous Michigan fans are curious what this football team will look like under Whittingham’s direction. I believe the Wolverines will be pretty good and have the potential to be really, really good under one condition. The condition is how much will quarterback Bryce Underwood be improved from last season? I think if he is greatly improved the Wolverines might have a chance to win nine or 10 games. I say if you root for Michigan, you better hope Underwood has improved, or it could be a long year in Ann Arbor this football season. The Fat Guy prediction: Kyle Wins his First as Coach 34 and Kalamazoo Boys 13.
The Detroit Lions will be getting ready for New Orleans in the home opener in about two weeks. The Lions secondary is my biggest concern to start this season. The Lions defense — or lack of defense I should say — will be under the microscope. The offense will be absolutely dynamite again this season so no worries on that side of the football. I will be ready to pick all the NFL games next week so stay tuned.
