The Deep Dive: There’s always been a tug-of-war in iron design between what golfers want to see at address and what they need to help them score. Many players prefer the sleek, better-player profiles behind the ball, but their scorecards tell a different story — one that includes inconsistent distance control, lower-than-ideal launch and the occasional “Where did that come from?” miss. If that happens a few times a round, blades probably aren’t the answer, but the new Cobra 3DP X irons could bridge the gap between what golfers desire and what they actually need.
The 3DP X is the most forgiving model in Cobra’s 3D-printed lineup, yet it doesn’t look like a traditional game-improvement club. Instead, it offers a compact shape and clean lines at address while quietly packing in technology that helps golfers launch the ball higher and produce more consistent distance.
Like the 3DP MB and 3DP Tour models, each 3DP X head is made from powdered 316 stainless steel, layered and fused with a laser. That process allows Cobra engineers to build an intricate internal lattice structure that removes mass from the middle of the head. With that weight savings, designers can reposition weight around the perimeter to increase stability and raise the moment of inertia.
To that end, Cobra places as much as 65 grams of tungsten into the toe of the 3DP X to help lower the center of gravity (CG) and encourage a higher launch. Shifting weight into the toe also offsets the mass of the hosel so the ideal strike point sits more in the true center of the face. The result is more consistent ball speed and better results when contact wanders away from the middle. The lattice also supports the head in a way that produces a more pleasing sound and feel at impact than many hollow-bodied irons.
In other words, the 3DP X is designed to look, sound and feel like a sleeker iron, even though it performs like a much more forgiving one.
Compared to the 3DP Tour iron, which looks nearly identical at address, the 3DP X is built to create more ball speed and less spin. The 3DP Tour uses slightly weaker lofts and is designed for more skilled players who want the added spin to shape shots and maximize control, while the 3DP X is designed for players who value stability, easy launch, enhanced ball speed and forgiveness.
For golfers intrigued by what 3D printing can unlock in golf equipment, but who worry that a Tour-inspired head may not deliver enough help, the 3DP X irons may be the sweet spot. They offer a friendlier way to take advantage of the technology, with a shape that doesn’t feel oversized and performance that stays consistent across the face.
