LAKE CITY — Brennan Weckwerth knew it would take a score at or near par to advance out of the Section 1, Class 3A boys golf meet and earn a trip to the state meet.

The Century senior seems to be at his best when the pressure is turned up.

That was the case Wednesday, when the pressure — a state-meet berth hanging in the balance — and the temperature (near 90 degrees) were both cranked up to 10.

So was Weckwerth’s game.

He made five birdies and 10 pars at The Jewel to shoot a 1-under-par 70 in the final round of the section meet. That gave him a 36-hole total of 1-over-par 143, good for fifth place and solidly within the safe side of the cut line to make it to state.

Weckwerth will finish his varsity career as a three-time state qualifier and will aim to improve upon his 27th-place finish of a year ago when he plays at the 2026 state meet on June 9-10 at Bunker Hills Golf Course in Coon Rapids.

The Century standout started his day Wednesday on a positive note, making a birdie on the first hole at The Jewel, a 554-yard par-5. He fell back a bit on the leaderboard after a double-bogey on hole No. 3, but he preserved a score of even-par 36 on the front nine by making five pars and recording another birdie, on the 286-yard par-4 hole No. 6, over the final six holes.

He then birdied two of the first four holes on the back nine, but back-to-back bogeys on holes 14 and 15 brought him back to even par. He rallied with a birdie at the par-5 16th hole (517 yards), then parred the final two holes to finish the round at 1-under 70.

Northfield’s Elias Ekern and Lakeville South’s Oliver Theal shared medalist honors, both at 136.

South also won the team title, shooting 5-under-par 279 as a team on Wednesday, for a two-round total of 572 and a six-shot victory over runner-up Northfield.

Austin’s Isaac Anderson placed 14th, while Will Gyarmaty was Mayo’s top finisher (42nd) and JM seventh-grader Louie Kakar placed 47th in his first section meet.

PIZM tops leaderboard in 1-2A

ROCHESTER — The Pine Island/Zumbrota-Mazeppa boys golf team saw its reign as the best team in Section 1, Class 2A, come to a halt last season.

But the Wildcats didn’t go away. That halt might be more of a pause, as opposed to an end.

PIZM will have to play its best again on Thursday if it wants to win its fifth section championship in six years, but the Wildcats will be atop the leaderboard when the final round of the Section 1-2A meet begins at 8 a.m. at Northern Hills Golf Course.

Four Wildcats are in the top eight, including tournament leader Joshua Scripture, who shot a 1-over-par 73 in Wednesday’s first round and takes a three-shot lead over Kenyon-Wanamingo’s Ayden Horsman and Rochester Lourdes’ Charlie Moeschler into the final 18 holes.

PIZM’s Logan Schurke and Jake Moran are tied for fifth, at 77, and PIZM freshman Owen Cordes is tied for eighth at 78. The Wildcats’ team score of 305 gives them a slim five-shot edge over Stewartville.

Coincidentally, Stewartville was the team nipping at PIZM’s heels when the Wildcats started their run of four straight section championships, from 2021-2024 (including a state championship in 2022). PIZM has duked it out with Albert Lea the past two years, the Wildcats beating the Tigers in 2024, but seeing Albert Lea turn the tables a year ago.

Albert Lea has bumped back up to Class 3A this spring, though, leaving PIZM and Stewartville to battle it out for a trip to state. Rochester Lourdes isn’t out of it, either. The Eagles are nine just shots off the lead after one round, while fourth-place Byron sits 16 shots back.

Scripture, meanwhile, has a solid, but not comfortable, three-shot lead over Horsman and Moeschler. Scripture’s teammates, Moran and Logan Schurke, are in a four-way tie for fourth place with a pair of Stewartville standouts, Austin Walker and Aric Cruz, who both fired rounds of 77 on Wednesday.

Two more Tigers — Carson Jannsen and Isaiah Nelson — are part of a four-way tie for eighth place after shooting 78 in the first round. PIZM’s Cordes and Lourdes’ Gavin Groettum are also sitting at 78.

The team champion and the top five individuals not on the winning team will qualify for the Class 2A state meet, set for June 9-10 at The Ridges at Sand Creek, in Jordan.
