Bellefontaine’s Gangluff Becomes 8th Man to Win Two of Ohio’s Most Prestigous Titles
Bellefontaine’s Stephen Gangluff joined a select group on Thursday when he shot a final-round 2-under 68 to win the 41st Ohio Senior Open Championship on the South Course of Firestone Country Club.
In doing he became the eighth player to win both the Ohio Open and the Ohio Senior Open, two of the most prestigious Open championships conducted by the Northern Ohio Section of the Professional Golfers Association.
Gangluff, 50, added the Senior Open title to the Ohio Open titles he won in 2018 and 2019. He also won in his first attempt as he did not meet the eligibility requirements of 50-and-over until September. His victory was worth $3,000.00.
Gangluff, who played at Ohio State, led the Senior Open from wire-to-wire. He opened with a bogey-free, record-tying 7-under 63 on Wednesday and while he suffered three bogeys on Thursday he was never really challenged.
After a birdie, par, birdie, eagle stretch to start the final nine holes he was 11 under and had a comfortable 6-shot lead over runnerup Joe Moore, who was already in the clubhouse at 6-under 134 (68-66).
The final day began with Gangluff holding a one-shot lead over 6-time champion Bob Sowards, of Dublin. The anticipated head-to-head finish never materialized as Gangluff birdied two of the first four holes while Sowards, 57, made pars. The two birdies put Gangluff at 9-under while Sowards, one of the other seven to win both Open titles, stayed at 6-under.
Moore, the head professional at Beavercreek Golf Club, made a tremendous rally to finish second. After being one of four players tied for sixth after the first round, Moore also went on a binge to start the back nine. He had two birdies and an eagle through the first four holes and added a third birdie on the 18th.
Perrysburg’s Mike Stone, Director of Instruction at Belmont Country Club and a two-time NOPGA Senior Player of the Year, added a second straight 68 to climb into a four-way tie for third with Sowards (64-72), Cincinnati’s Sam Arnold (66-70) and Firestone Director of Instruction Steve Parker (66-70).
Former Firestone and Canton Brookside Director of Golf Gary Robison (71-67) shared seventh place with Brookside member Jeff Mallette (71-67, low amateur) and Youngstown’s Garrett Frank (70-68), who finished as the two low amateurs at two-under 138.
Cincinnati’s Larry King
Cincinnati’s Larry King, owner and operator of Tri County Golf Ranch, put together rounds of 70-73 to win the 60-and-over Senior Plus Division at 3-over 143. He edged defending champion and first round leader Mark Borlin, of Stow, who went 68-76. Jeff Knox, from Boston Heights and a member at Canterbury, finished third at 71-74=145.
