The Liverpool city centre shopping area revealed the new addition ahead of The Open Championship which will take place in Merseyside

As the eyes of the golfing world turn to Merseyside with the 154th Open due to tee off at the Royal Birkdale next week, a giant 1,000-square metre portrait of local golfing star Tommy Fleetwood has been unveiled in Liverpool city centre.
The 40m x 25m painting has been created on the grass at Chavasse Park at Liverpool ONE to celebrate the start of the world’s oldest golf tournament. The image of Southport-born Fleetwood took three people two days to create using special grass pitch-marking paint and was unveiled at lunchtime today, Friday (July 10), ahead of the start of the championship.

The unveiling was attended by Brendan Hattam, centre director at Liverpool ONE, who said: “As the region welcomes visitors not just from around the UK, but from across the world, we wanted to mark this special occasion with a supersized display of support and we think we’ve got Tommy’s image down to a tee.
“For eight days the eyes of the golfing world will be focussed on neighbouring Royal Birkdale and I know people across the region are both proud and excited to be celebrating The Open’s return.
“There’s going to be a real buzz around the city for what is one of the world’s greatest golf championships and we’re delighted to be playing a small part in the celebrations with our huge display of support.”
The Open is one of the four major championships in men’s golf, alongside the Masters, the PGA Championship and the U.S. Open.

Thousands of people will arrive for one of the most prestigious golf events of the year. Fans from across the world will be planning their journey to the Merseyside town.
The world’s best players will be arriving in the region to compete for the coveted Claret Jug. Royal Birkdale has been The Open’s most regular venue, other than St Andrews, since it first hosted the tournament in 1954.
Birkdale is hosting The Open for the 11th time and is the first to host “The Open Experiences”, offering a new range of tickets and experiences for fans.
The Open is taking place from July 16 to July 19, 2026.
