CLEVELAND – McMinn County golf began its season right with a competitive finish in an 18-hole tournament featuring some of the top programs in the southeastern part of the state.

The boys’ team finished seventh out of 12 teams in the Don Burke Memorial Tournament on Monday at Flagstone Golf Club, posting a team score of 330.

Nate White led McMinn with a 75, and Brayden Fowler carded a 79, Levi Roche 86, Parker McDonald 90 and Gavin Selvage 96.

Zoe Benton was the lone girl competing for McMinn on Monday, and her score of 78 was good for a tie for sixth individually among a field of 27 golfers.

Among the boys’ teams, Walker Valley took the team title with a score of 292. Signal Mountain was runner-up with a 301, followed in order by Baylor with 310, Chattanooga Christian 317, Bradley Central 318, Cleveland 318, McMinn 330, Soddy-Daisy 337, Boyd-Buchanan 338, Rhea County 344, East Hamilton 360 and Ooltewah 361.

The girls’ team finish was Ooltewah in first place with a 154, followed by Chattanooga Christian with 158, Bradley 159, Soddy-Daisy 164, Walker Valley 181, Cleveland 186 and Boyd-Buchanan 200.

McMinn is back in action 4 p.m. Monday, Aug. 3, playing on its home course at Springbrook Golf and Country Club for the first time and hosting Ooltewah and Tellico Plains.
