Obviously, the last thing I was expecting when I got the phone call that I had a brain tumour – but I had a brain tumour nonetheless.

“So I think that was the first for the AFL program, they don’t normally expect that. But fortunately enough, Gavin Davis – the surgeon, who’s a big Melbourne supporter – he was able to get it out and fortunately enough it wasn’t a serious tumour.”

Asked by fellow On The Couch panellist Jordan Lewis what his immediate thoughts were upon receiving the brain tumour news, Brown said: “It’s unbelievable … It’s the unknown, no doubt about it.

“I got told on the first phone call you need an open brain surgery. I hadn’t even spoken to the surgeon, you go: ‘Hang on a minute, you normally don’t have open brain surgery for something minor.‘

“There was two things with the tumour: Can they get it out or is it going to be problematic in trying to access it? Obviously mine was a fair way down.

“And then, secondly, what grade is it? For the best part of 10 days, you’re hoping and praying it’s not a Grade 3 or 4 – which is obviously the worst and you’re in big trouble then.

“Fortunately enough they get it out and then you still have to wait for the initial results. I had to wait another four or five days and got the word back that it certainly wasn’t a Grade 3 or 4 tumour, so you breathe a deep sigh of relief.

“But, yeah, I tell you what, it puts things into perspective.”

Jonathan Brown was had to be back with Bucks!Source: FOX SPORTS

Brown then opened up about his thought-process both immediately after the diagnosis and just before his surgery.

“I remember flying home back to the Gold Coast that night – because I said I had to go home to the family for a few days to process this. My head was spinning, just thoughts running through your mind … You’re just hoping and praying that it’s not ‘it’, because you’re thinking of the kids and the family,” he said.

“I wanted to get back to normality the next day – I shot my lowest ever golf score the next day, so it put things into perspective because the last thing I was thinking about was whether I was about to sink this putt, so it was good for the golf game!

“A few days later, the last thought I had before I went to sleep … I’m lying on my bed and at the end of my bed is the TV screens where Gavin is going to work off the screens and there’s my brain just sitting there, a road map of my brain. I’m thinking: ‘Six or seven days ago, I was going about my business, how the hell did I get here a week later? I’m about to have my skull cut open and a tumour is going to come out of my head and I hope like hell I wake up and I’m still the way I am normally.’”

Why Fagan must ‘shuffle the magnets’ | 04:23

Brown said he feels back to normality and exercising, claiming he “blew my mates up at a training session the other day, they couldn’t go with me”.

“I feel good, I’ve watched the footy the last couple of weeks,” he said. “I was incredibly fatigued as you could imagine after it, but I feel in really good shape and my brain tissue hasn’t been impacted, apart from the tumour coming out.

“It was about the size of a golf ball, so it shows you how delicate and clever these people are. And in Gavin’s case, he’s a marvel because he went in there and he just did a slight nick and my brain function hasn’t been affected, so I continue on to lead a normal life.”

Brown was at the Gabba on Saturday to see his beloved Lions go down to ladder-leaders Fremantle, which claimed its 11th straight win.

Browns said the Dockers had “matured into that contender” many thought they could become, while they also had “the two most influential big men in the competition” in Luke Jackson and Josh Treacy. He added: “They’ve got a really good spine, a deep midfield now … they’ve got good speed and good role players.”

As for reigning premiers Brisbane, which has now lost its past three games, Brown said there were alarm bells.

Zorko out for longer than expected | 01:18

“We’ve all watched the Lions the last couple of years. The two point of differences where they were stronger than every other team was obviously midfield depth – they would overwhelm you with the talent in there and the pressure they applied to the opposition – and then also their ball movement, on the back of Dayne Zorko. So those two factors are misfiring at the moment,” he said.

“The midfield clearly are all down. Lachie Neale’s had a pretty good year, but the rest of them have all struggled. And no Dayne Zorko (due to injury), so they’re struggling to move the ball

“Is it hunger or is it fatigue? Two concerning things as a Lions watcher and supporter.

“The way they got belted last week against GWS reminded me of Sydney when they got belted late in ‘24 and never recovered – (lost by) 112 points to Port Adelaide – and obviously the Lions got belted by GWS (in Round 11).

“And then ‘Simmo’ (Adam Simpson) doing the commentary on the weekend saying the Lions look like they’re getting ‘bullied’.

“Two troubling things, for me, in terms of their premiership chances. So they’ve got to turn it around.”

Triple premiership Lion Jonathan Brown has paid tribute to his persistent wife Kylie, whose determination to see her…

[2
5564,987,976,5555,5566,5553,5542,5533,5537,5546,5549,5562,5558,5538,5543,5548,5550,5561,5545,44,1913,5563,5534,5532,5544,5540,5535,5554,5541,5565,968,5559,5536,5560,5552,4834,5556,969,5547,5551,5557,5539
post-12846","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","category-news","tag-adam-simpson","tag-australia","tag-australia-and-new-zealand","tag-australian-football-league","tag-ball-movement","tag-ben-dixon","tag-ben-waterworth","tag-bounce-back","tag-brain-function","tag-brain-scan","tag-brain-surgery","tag-brain-tissue","tag-brain-tumour","tag-brain-tumour-news","tag-brisbane-lions","tag-chris-fagan","tag-defensive-efforts","tag-gavin-davis","tag-gold-coast","tag-golf","tag-golf-ball","tag-head-knocks","tag-head-scan","tag-jonathan-brown","tag-jordan-lewis","tag-josh-treacy","tag-lachie-neale","tag-leigh-montagna","tag-low-grade-brain-tumour","tag-nagging-wives-save","tag-oceania","tag-open-brain-surgery","tag-port-adelaide","tag-premiership-chances","tag-quad-strain","tag-queensland","tag-role-players","tag-south-australia","tag-suns-brace","tag-the-gabba","tag-triple-premiership","tag-wives-save-lives
["GET
