There must be something in the water at South Winn Country Club in Calmar \u2013 or maybe its the Shirly Temples from Jim at Silver Springs in Ossian \u2013 because the Warrior golf program has been on fire over the past several weeks. After both teams qualified for State for the first time in the same season the week before, the SW boys made it back-to-back years as Class 1A runners-up on Wednesday (May 27) in Newton to set the table for the Warrior girls to bring home a third-place trophy on Friday night from the girls\u2019 State Meet just a few miles down the road in Boone.<\/p>\n
\u201cAfter coming into the tournament seeded as the number eight team, the girls decided that now was the time to play the best golf of their lives with a 353 on day two to finish in third,\u201d said a proud coach Glenna Munuswamy following the conclusion of round two of the Class 1A Girls\u2019 State Meet at Cedar Pointe Golf Course. \u201cThis is the highest finish at State in South Winn history, and we are so proud of everything these ladies have accomplished!\u201d<\/p>\n
The Warriors began their hunt for a team trophy on Thursday morning as the squad shot a 365 and was in fourth after 18 holes in.<\/p>\n
The team shaved 12 strokes off their day one performance by shooting a 353 on Friday, finishing with a two-day total of 718 to jump into third and bring home the program\u2019s first-ever State team trophy.<\/p>\n
Sophomore Claire Becker led the Warriors each day with an 83 Thursday and an 84 Friday to finish with a 167, earning her individual honors as the 10th place medalist. Also coming up big for the team and just missing a medalist spot was fellow sophomore Maya Lensing with a 170. Lensing shot an 84 and an 86 to finish in 13th.<\/p>\n
First-year golfer Bailey Kuennen shot a 192 (94 and 98) to give South Winn an all-sophomore top three, while junior Chloe Wiltgen rounded out the team score with a 197 (104 and 93).<\/p>\n
Freshman Jadyn Holthaus was also right in the scoring mix with a 198 as she shot an even 90 in round two to improve 18 strokes from Thursday\u2019s score of 108.<\/p>\n
Rounding out the team\u2019s lineup was Addison Timp with a 212 (109\/103), who closed out her golf career as a piece of a history-making team as the lone senior on this year\u2019s roster.<\/p>\n
Winning the team title for Class 1A was Easton Valley with a 701, two strokes under runner-up Highland with a 703, while Mt.
