{"id":13937,"date":"2026-06-03T01:44:11","date_gmt":"2026-06-03T01:44:11","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/golf\/13937\/"},"modified":"2026-06-03T01:44:11","modified_gmt":"2026-06-03T01:44:11","slug":"owner-of-stolen-truck-found-on-fire-at-saanich-golf-course-speaks-out","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/golf\/13937\/","title":{"rendered":"Owner of stolen truck found on fire at Saanich golf course speaks out"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The owner of a truck that was stolen last week and found on fire at the Cedar Hill Golf Course is hoping the suspect will turn their life around.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For ten years, Tony Nicholls has taken care of the green space outside of his church at North Douglas Pentecostal in Saanich.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Watch below:<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">As he was finishing up using a leaf blower around 9 p.m. on May 28, he noticed that someone had gotten inside the work truck. Nicholls says he was confused until the driver went over the curb and drove away.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cIt was like, \u2018Is this really happening?&#8217;\u201d, said Nichols.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">After trying to catch up to the driver on foot, he called Saanich Police. <\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><a href=\"https:\/\/cheknews.ca\/person-in-custody-after-setting-fire-to-stolen-vehicle-on-golf-course-saanich-police-1327199\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Police said they received a call of a stolen vehicle in the 600 block of Jolly Place,<\/a> but later on would find that vehicle at the Cedar Hill Recreation Centre several kilometres away. <\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The driver of the stolen truck then drove onto the Cedar Hill Golf Course, hitting two police vehicles in the process. <\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThey had him boxed in, and they backed off, surrounded the golf course, and brought the dogs in,\u201d said Nicholls.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Police located the stolen vehicle in the middle of the fairway of the seventh hole, on fire.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">One man, Bronston Vincent Barry, remains in custody with five charges pending, including motor vehicle theft and mischief to property over $5,000.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Inside the burnt truck were the owner\u2019s ID, wallet, lawn equipment, cash, customer information and pay cheques from previous jobs.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI\u2019m probably up to around $20,000. So it\u2019s a big hit,\u201d said Nichols.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Nichols isn\u2019t letting this setback affect him. He hopes that the suspect will instead turn their life around.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cMy hope and prayers are that he finds some peace with God and reaches out for help and get his life in order,\u201d said Nichols. <\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In the meantime, Nichols is using an older truck that he says needs additional work to be reliable and has rented out some equipment. <\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A<a href=\"https:\/\/www.gofundme.com\/f\/tonys-torched-truck\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\"> GoFundMe page<\/a> has also been set up in his name to help offset the cost of replacing his equipment.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI\u2019m limping along\u2026I\u2019ve had to modify some things, but you know what? It is getting better,\u201d said the owner. <\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Cedar Hill Golf Course is fully reopened, including the affected fairway.
