{"id":15798,"date":"2026-06-05T04:49:08","date_gmt":"2026-06-05T04:49:08","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/golf\/15798\/"},"modified":"2026-06-05T04:49:08","modified_gmt":"2026-06-05T04:49:08","slug":"kupcho-seizes-slim-lead-in-us-womens-open-at-riviera-golf-supersport","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/golf\/15798\/","title":{"rendered":"Kupcho seizes slim lead in US Women&#8217;s Open at Riviera | golf | SuperSport"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Jennifer Kupcho made a hot start in firing a five-under-par 66 for a one-shot lead in the first round of the US Women&#8217;s Open at Riviera Country Club on Thursday.<\/p>\n<p>Kupcho, trying to reverse her US Open fortunes after missing the cut the past three years, opened with three straight birdies on the Los Angeles course, which hosts the PGA Tour&#8217;s Genesis Invitational and will be the venue for Olympic golf at the 2028 Summer Games.<\/p>\n<p>The American finished with seven birdies and two bogeys and a one-shot lead over South Korean Kim Sei-young.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">Jennifer Kupcho takes the clubhouse lead as we close out Round 1 at Riv \ud83d\udcaa <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/rB2B9YluPe\" rel=\"nofollow\">pic.twitter.com\/rB2B9YluPe<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u2014 LPGA (@LPGA) <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/LPGA\/status\/2062708216526717164?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\" rel=\"nofollow\">June 5, 2026<\/a><\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I was hitting the ball well today, also rolling the ball really well with the putter,&#8221; Kupcho said. &#8220;So seeing a lot of things fall definitely helped with the confidence with my putter.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Kupcho, vying for a second major title to go with her 2022 Chevron Championship, said she felt &#8220;at home&#8221; at Riviera, where her length off the tee is a distinct advantage.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;It&#8217;s kind of a ball-striker&#8217;s paradise, just hit it down the fairway, hit it on the green, and make the putts,&#8221; she said.<\/p>\n<p>After applying that formula so successfully she said it was &#8220;a little bit of a weight off my chest&#8221; after her recent lack of success in the tournament.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Barring something crazy doesn&#8217;t happen tomorrow, I&#8217;ll be playing on the weekend,&#8221; Kupcho said.<\/p>\n<p>World No 1 Nelly Korda, chasing her second straight major title after victory in the Chevron Championship last month, found the going far less smooth on the way to a two-over-par 73.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">Where things stand after Round 1 at the <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/uswomensopen?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\" rel=\"nofollow\">@uswomensopen<\/a> \ud83d\udc4a <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/WFcPHVkXJE\" rel=\"nofollow\">pic.twitter.com\/WFcPHVkXJE<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u2014 LPGA (@LPGA) <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/LPGA\/status\/2062741176692924673?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\" rel=\"nofollow\">June 5, 2026<\/a><\/p>\n<p>KORDA GRINDING <\/p>\n<p>Korda teed off on 10 and after an encouraging birdie at 11 made back-to-back bogeys at 12 and 13, signalling the start of a tough day.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I honestly just hit it really poorly off the tee,&#8221; said Korda, who finished tied for second behind Maja Stark in last year&#8217;s US Open.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Found myself in a lot of trouble on the wrong sides of a lot of these pins.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I just felt like I was grinding to make safe pars.
