Specialized merchandise. A complimentary car wash. It’s all part of the “Players Club” experience at TPC Sawgrass this week at the Players Championship, an $11,000, all-inclusive weekly pass that’s become the PGA Tour’s most premium ticket option for its marquee tournament.

SBJ got a look inside the Players Club on Tuesday, from the entrance at the front of the TPC Sawgrass clubhouse to the bird’s-eye view of the 17th tee.

Players Club pass holders arrive at TPC Sawgrass — only 750 weekly passes are sold — and have valet parking before they’re whisked to the very front of the clubhouse, where on Tuesday many players, agents, tour and tournament officials were milling about. Guests check in and have a number of options.

There are three main tentpoles to the Players Club offering: clubhouse dining, both indoor and outdoor; Iron & Wedge, the new reserved-dining option on the 18th hole; and the all-inclusive open-air viewing deck above the par-3 17th hole, considered by many as one of the most famous holes in golf.

Just inside the clubhouse entrance is not dining, but merchandise. TPC Sawgrass’s pro shop is filled with specialized items that can only be purchased there. Among those spotted shopping on Tuesday included Rory McIlroy’s manager, Sean O’Flaherty.

Most of the merchandise is adorned with a golden goat, a special logo exclusive to the clubhouse pro shop. The goat logo pays homage to TPC Sawgrass’s opening in the 1980s, when a heard of goats helped clear unwanted brush. While not officially confirmed, the logo also is likely a play on what Augusta National Golf Club has done with its top hospitality option, Berckmans Place, which has its own specialized logo that can only be purchased in the venue that lines the fifth hole.

Myriad food options are available in the clubhouse, which has large dining rooms as well as several tiers of outdoor decks that layer down to the golf course. Food options change day to day during Players week, and on Tuesday, there was a raw bar with fresh oysters, shrimp, crab and lobster along with many variations of steaks, sushi, vegetarian options and wood-fired pizza, not to mention an array of beer and mixed drinks.

Food and beverage are all inclusive of the $11,000 weekly price (including tip). For comparison, Augusta National’s Map & Flag hospitality offering across Washington Road from the golf course goes for about $17,000 for the week.

After a look at the clubhouse, Jared Rice, the PGA Tour’s senior vice president of revenue and event management, took SBJ to check out Iron & Wedge, the reservation-only dining option inside the hospitality venue just to the right of the 18th green. The menu at Iron & Wedge includes USDA Prime Angus and American Wagyu steaks, seared sea bass, lobster mac and cheese, truffle parmesan pommes frites, tuna tartare and jumbo shrimp cocktails.

With the all-inclusive nature of the Players Club ticket, one group of patrons was spotted dining in the clubhouse on Tuesday afternoon, and not 45 minutes later was seated for a second lunch inside Iron & Wedge. One group spotted inside Iron & Wedge on Tuesday included USGA CEO Mike Whan and Chief Commercial Officer Jon Podany dining with Rolex officials including Arnaud Laborde and Alex Gasser.

Tour officials are expecting around 300 guests inside Iron & Wedge per day. In addition to reserved seating, the venue also has outdoor covered seating that offers aerial views of the 18th green.

The 17th hole viewing deck is another option that offers all-inclusive food and beverage for Players Club pass holders. It’s located directly above Golf Channel’s “Live From” set and, while relatively light on patrons Tuesday around 2pm, likely will be a popular spot once competition begins on Thursday.

One final Players Club perk: Members can have their cars washed and detailed while at the Players Championship.

The evolution of the Players Club follows a trend in golf hospitality in recent years — premium, high-end food and beverage, but with increasingly more touch points for ticket holders across the golf course, rather than just one specified area.

“We want fans to be out on the golf course, we want it to be convenient and we want it to be premium,” Rice said. “That’s a big challenge with these types of products, to make sure you’re delivering an elevated product in a temporary environment.”

PONTE VEDRA BEACH, Fla. — Freshly caught lobster, crab, shrimp and oysters.
