Add another milestone for teenage golfing phenom Miles Russell.<\/p>\n
The Jacksonville Beach resident grabbed the fourth and final spot for the U.S. Open after finishing in a tie for third for qualifying in the BallenIsles Country Club event on Monday. Russell jumped up 11 spots after a final round 5-under 67. Russell, the dynamic 17-year-old golf prodigy, finished at 6-under 138. <\/p>\n
Russell was one of 715 players scattered at 10 qualifiers around the country and Canada trying to earn one of 43 spots for the 126th U.S. Open. And Russell had a familiar face on his bag Monday, none other than Charlie Woods, the son of golf legend Tiger Woods. <\/p>\n
\u201cIt kept it so light,\u201d Russell told the Associated Press. \u201cIt\u2019s the first time I\u2019ve had a buddy on the bag. I really like it, not talking much golf, just having a good time.\u201d<\/p>\n
The U.S. Open is June 18-21 at Shinnecock Hills in Southhampton, New York.<\/p>\n
In qualifying in Westerville, Ohio, St. Simons Island resident Davis Thompson won at 11-under 133 to earn a U.S. Open spot. Jacksonville Beach resident Jackson Suber had a 10-under 132 to win the Rockville, Maryland qualifier, three shots in front of Ponte Vedra Beach resident Ben Kohles (7-under 135). <\/p>\n
Billy Horschel finished in a tie for third to nab a qualifying spot in the Springfield, Ohio qualifier. Horschel shot a 7-under 133. <\/p>\n
