Shane Lowry is hoping to ‘jump start’ the rest of his year at the RBC Canadian Open this week.<\/p>\n
The Offaly man<\/a> is in action in Toronto after finishing in a tie for 13th place and five shots off the winner at last year’s tournament. Lowry<\/a> has opted to play the event ahead of next week’s US Open, but his close friend and Ryder Cup<\/a> teammate Rory McIlroy <\/a>is not in the field.<\/p>\n McIlroy missed the cut at the Canadian Open last year<\/a> after finishing on nine-over for the opening two days. The Holywood native previously won the $9.8million tournament in both 2019 and 2022.<\/p>\n “I’ve always loved coming up to Canada,” Lowry told Sportsnet. I think it’s a great time of year to come here and get in a really good tournament the week before the US Open<\/a> and I’ve played pretty good here over the years. I remember having a little bit of a chance here coming down the last few holes last year so hopefully I can do it again this year and give myself a chance.”<\/p>\n On his year so far, Lowry added: “It’s gotten a bit slow. I had a good start to the year… I certainly need something to jump start the rest of my year and there wouldn’t be a better week than this so hopefully it happens this week.”<\/p>\n Lowry’s two children Iris and Ivy are in Canada for this week’s event with his wife Wendy and the 39-year-old admits it would be extra special to win it in front of them after a devastating late collapse at the Cognizant Classic earlier this year.<\/a><\/p>\n Holding a commanding three-shot lead with three holes to play, Lowry hit back-to-back tee shots into the water on the 16th and 17th holes. The resulting double-bogeys handed the title to Colombia’s Nico Echavarria.<\/p>\n “At the Cognizant, I was probably most devastated for that reason,” he explained. “Especially my little one, she’s never been there when I won a tournament so it’s a big motivation of mine. It’s the reason I get up every morning, they’re here this week, we’re only a couple of miles down the road.”<\/p>\n Lowry begins his tournament alongside England’s Alex Fitzpatrick and Scot Robert MacIntyre at 6.10pm Irish time on Thursday.<\/p>\n
