{"id":24728,"date":"2026-06-21T08:34:11","date_gmt":"2026-06-21T08:34:11","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/golf\/24728\/"},"modified":"2026-06-21T08:34:11","modified_gmt":"2026-06-21T08:34:11","slug":"clark-builds-big-lead-but-scheffler-in-with-a-shot-at-us-open-glory","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/golf\/24728\/","title":{"rendered":"Clark builds big lead but Scheffler in with a shot at US Open glory"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Scottie Scheffler knows he will need a fantastic final round to catch up with Wyndham Clark, but the world number one feels he is in with a chance at the US Open.<\/p>\n<p>Clark, who won the US Open in 2023,\u00a0holds a six-stroke lead\u00a0at Shinnecock Hills after he carded\u00a070 on Saturday.<\/p>\n<p>Scheffler, however, is in contention.<\/p>\n<p>Having carded 72 in the first round and 68 in the second, Scheffler suffered an early setback when he started his third round with back-to-back bogeys.<\/p>\n<p>However, Scheffler went on a streak of four birdies within six holes, including a sublime chip on the 14th, to move himself into second place on one-under par, alongside\u00a0Sahith Theegala, Tom Kim and Sam Stevens.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We&#8217;ve been battling hard for a few days, and I did a good job of keeping myself in the tournament,&#8221; Scheffler said.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I&#8217;ll need a really nice round if I&#8217;m going to try and catch Wyndham.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I&#8217;ve worked really hard for a long time to have a chance to win golf tournaments and to win major championships. I think understanding the moment and giving it your best shot is all part of the process.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We want to be in these positions. This is why we practise and play, to have the opportunity to win golf tournaments, and that&#8217;s what [Sunday]\u00a0is. I have an opportunity to go out there and have a great round and give myself a chance to win the tournament.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\" lang=\"en\">&#8220;I think it&#8217;s appropriate to understand what&#8217;s at stake. I&#8217;ve worked really hard for a long time to have a chance to win golf tournaments and to win major championships.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Scottie Scheffler will be in the final pairing on Sunday in search of the career Grand Slam.\u2026<\/p>\n<p>\u2014 PGA TOUR (@PGATOUR) <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/PGATOUR\/status\/2068494492089426383?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\" rel=\"nofollow\">June 21, 2026<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Emiliano Grillo surged up 40 places with the day&#8217;s low score of 67, while Tommy Fleetwood&#8217;s 70 saw him move up 12 spots into T10.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The tournament is not really in my control,&#8221; said Fleetwood.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I felt like I probably should have or could have got a couple more out of it [the round on Friday] and almost feel the same [after Saturday].<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I can&#8217;t complain about where I am. I&#8217;ve been playing really, really well. I&#8217;ve just got to go out there, shoot the best score I can, and see what happens. The tournament is in other people&#8217;s hands rather than mine, so I&#8217;m just going to go out there and do the best.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;It&#8217;s nice when you have good memories of a place, isn&#8217;t it? I have great shots to go off and good feelings, so I can draw on that. I&#8217;ve enjoyed battling with the golf course so far this week and looking forward to another shot at it.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Clark, meanwhile, feels he could have built an even bigger lead.
