He rebounded with birdie at the fifth, but then carded back-to-back bogeys at Nos. 6 and 7. He had a good look at birdie on the ninth, but his putt didn’t break how he expected and skirted the right side of the cup, which prompted the 31-year-old Spaniard to unleash a loud obscenity that was picked up by the TV microphone.<\/p>\n
Still, he made the turn in 2-over 37 and was sitting comfortably inside the cutline at even par for the tournament. It was nothing short of disaster for the 2021 U.S. Open champion, and it only got worse. His drive on the par-5 16th found a fairway bunker, his second shot found another fairway bunker and his third shot ended up in a greenside bunker. His fourth shot? Well, it failed to leave the bunker. Rahm, ranked No. 8 in the world, has also been dynamite on LIV Golf this season, with two wins and three runner-up finishes.<\/p>\n
But he won’t have a tee time this weekend at Shinnecock and he’ll have to wait until mid-July for another crack at his third major title when he competes in the Open Championship at Royal Birkdale.
