Rory McIlroy vented his frustrations after a wayward shot ended up in the bunker on a frustrating final day at the US Open.<\/p>\n

The six-time major champion had high hopes at a blustery Shinnecock Hills, where the conditions have been a big talking point<\/a>, but slipped out of contention with a miserable back nine implosion on Saturday.<\/p>\n

McIlroy made five bogeys and shot 40 on the back, finishing with a 3-over 73 that pretty much ended any chances of catching runaway leader Wyndham Clark<\/a> — who criticized crowds earlier this weekend<\/a>.<\/p>\n

He quickly left Shinnecock Hills after his round, making his way through a crowd of fans to reach his car.<\/p>\n

The world No.2 was back out on the links Sunday, but it seems he might have preferred to stay home instead.<\/p>\n

Rory McIlory frustrated in poor US Open finish<\/p>\n

Following an early bogey, another poor approach led to McIlroy venting his frustrations.<\/p>\n

“Ah, just go home Rory. F***ing hell,” he said, in audio picked up by television microphones, as his ball dribbled off the green and into the bunker on hole 3.<\/p>\n

McIlroy has fallen down the leaderboard through seven holes on Sunday, and sits T40 at 6-over.<\/p>\n

The Hollywood man had started his final round at three over par, and ten shots behind leader Clark.<\/p>\n

He told reporters he had hopes of making a move after he wrapped up on Saturday.<\/p>\n

“Just try to limit the mistakes a little bit over the weekend,” McIlroy said.<\/p>\n

“Feel like I\u2019m playing well enough to pick off a few birdies here and there.”<\/p>\n

Instead, his Sunday has been just as frustrating, and he has a mountain to climb to even get back into the top 10 at Shinnecock as his US Open effort draws to a close.<\/p>\n

Rory McIlroy to skip next Signature Event<\/p>\n

Once the weekend is done, McIlroy will have some time to digest his performance.<\/p>\n

He’s decided against teeing it up at\u00a0upcoming Travelers Championship at TPC River Highlands, in a scheduling decision that has become common<\/a> this year.<\/p>\n

The Northern Irishman also skipped the RBC Heritage and Cadillac Championship events earlier this season.<\/p>\n

McIlroy is expected to return to action at Scottish Open, which gets underway on July 9,\u00a0and has already confirmed his participation there.<\/p>\n
