Young Nairn golfers <\/a>braved the weather last week for the anticipated return of an annual school tournament.<\/p>\n

Around 20 pupils took part in Nairn Academy<\/a>\u2019s Annual Golf Championship, which was held at Nairn Dunbar Golf Club<\/a> on Friday.<\/p>\n

The storm didn\u2019t dampen the spirits on the day, as the competition finally returned after being interrupted in the years of the Covid-19 pandemic.<\/p>\n

The championship trophy was donated by the family of Daniel Burgess, a former pupil and sports enthusiast who tragically lost his life back in 2007, aged only 15, and is now named after him as a tribute to his memory.<\/p>\n

Steven Ednie, who is head of faculty at the school\u2019s art, design and technology department and organised the return of the tournament, said it was a really good day \u2014 despite one of the pupils describing it as \u201cthe worst weather they ever golfed in\u201d.<\/p>\n

Mr Ednie said: \u201cI wasn\u2019t really sure if it would be going ahead given Thursday night\u2019s weather \u2014 as if there was a risk of lightning, they would have shut the course. Thankfully we managed to go ahead, and it went really well!<\/p>\n

\u201cMost of the pupils braved the weather \u2014 some of them didn\u2019t make it through the whole day \u2014 but they had fun.<\/p>\n

Creating a connection with Nairn\u2019s golfing heritage, the championship is set to return as an annual event and will be held each year in one of the town\u2019s two golf clubs, on rotation.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s really generous for both clubs to provide the golf course for free,\u201d he said, as the plan is for June next year to host the second edition at Nairn Golf Club.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe\u2019ve got ex pupils that are off on pro-tours – there is a real rich history within the town, so to link all of these young people\u2019s hobbies and passions to the school orbit is quite nice. \u201c<\/p>\n

On the day, S4 student Roddy Stewart won the Daniel Burgess Memorial Trophy \u2014 with only four over par \u2014 and the handycap section was won by S4 pupil Devon Barclay.<\/p>\n
