Know the news with the 7NEWS app: Download today Arrow<\/a><\/p>\n Almost four years ago to the day, Sydney woman Marina Hanna died<\/a> in a similar accident in the same location when the buggy driven by her husband overturned on Whitsunday Blvd and crashed during their 2022 honeymoon. <\/p>\n The 29-year-old sustained critical injuries and was declared dead at the scene.
<\/p>\n The pair had been married in Sydney only 10 days earlier.
<\/p>\n Hanna\u2019s husband, Robbie Awad, was initially charged over the death of his new bride, but was eventually found not guilty of driving without due care and attention, causing death, after the buggy was found to be faulty and unexpectedly sped up and tipped while he was making a U-turn.<\/p>\n Awad, however, had earlier plead guilty to using a mobile phone while driving and not wearing seatbelts.<\/p>\n
Only days before Tuesday\u2019s incident, a woman died in the tourist hotspot after crashing an e-bike on Melaleuca Dr after colliding with a tree on Friday. <\/p>\n She was treated by paramedics at the scene, however, could not be saved and died a short time later. <\/p>\n Hamilton Island has a history of incidents with tourists and alternative modes of transport on the largely car free island, with many mistakenly thinking road rules are relaxed. <\/p>\n However, rules that apply to drivers on the mainland also apply to transport on the island, including penalties for drink driving, not wearing a seatbelt and using a mobile phone while driving. <\/p>\n A speed limit of 40km\/h applies across the island, drivers need to be at least 21 years old and hold a full driver\u2019s licence and a maximum of four people allowed in the carts.<\/p>\n In May 2023, five people were injured in a single golf buggy collision, with one airlifted to hospital in a serious condition, after the vehicle driven by an 18-year-old woman crashed.<\/p>\n A In 2016 a six-seater golf buggy carrying nine people crashed, critically injuring a baby and her mother who were airlifted to hospital in life threatening conditions, and seriously injuring several others. <\/p>\n The company that owned the buggy were fined after an investigation found the buggy\u2019s break pads were completely worn down. <\/p>\n In recent years, new modes of transport, such as e-scooters and e-bikes, have also been involved in accidents on Hamilton Island. <\/p>\n <\/p>\n US Supreme Court upholds major decision on transgender athletes<\/p>\n 2 min read<\/p>\n![\"Marina](\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/golf\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/07\/46c6907a26111d2b8a57e3304da7c5c8a0acc8ca.jpg\")
