AUGUSTA, Ga. (WJBF) \u2013 Rory McIlroy is the Champion of the 90th Masters Tournament. He is just the fourth player in Tournament history to win the green jacket in back-to-back years following Jack Nicklaus (1965 and \u201966), Nick Faldo (1989 and \u201990) and Tiger Woods (2001 and \u201902). McIlroy\u2019s final round 71 left him at 12-under par for the Tournament, one better than two-time Champion Scottie Scheffler. <\/p>\n

McIlroy entered the weekend with a six-shot lead, the largest 36 hole advantage in Masters history, but saw it disappear while shooting a 73 during Saturday\u2019s third round. He weathered the storm to share the lead after 54 holes and earn his second green jacket on Sunday.<\/p>\n

\u201cI thought it was so difficult to win last year because of trying to win the Masters and the grand slam, and then this year I realized it\u2019s just really difficult to win the Masters,\u201d McIlroy said. \u201cI tried to convince myself it was both.<\/p>\n

\u201cJust absolutely delighted to be able to get it done. Having a six-shot lead going into the weekend, it would have been a bitter pill to swallow if I wasn\u2019t able to get myself over the finish line.\u201d<\/p>\n

While it was McIlroy\u2019s second Masters win, it was his first with his parents in attendance. <\/p>\n

\u201cI caught myself on the golf course a couple of times thinking about them, and I was like no, not yet, not yet,\u201d he said. \u201cYeah, it\u2019s really cool to have them here.<\/p>\n

\u201cThey missed it last year, and the first thing I wanted to do was fly home to see them because I obviously wouldn\u2019t be sitting up here if it wasn\u2019t for them. I had to sort of convince them to come this year because they thought the reason I won last year was because they weren\u2019t here.<\/p>\n

\u201cI said on the putting green that I\u2019m glad we proved that wrong, so they can keep coming as long as they want.\u201d<\/p>\n

Scheffler, who was 12 off of the lead on Friday night, shot 65-68 on the weekend to finish solo second. <\/p>\n

\u201cThe first two days I played what I felt was really solid on Thursday, and then Friday with the softer greens, that round really hurt, especially mistakes I made on the back nine,\u201d Scheffler said. \u201cBut overall over the weekend I put up a good fight, did a lot of good stuff in order to give myself a chance and ultimately came up a couple shots short.\u201d<\/p>\n

Russell Henley, a Georgia native from Macon who played college golf at the University of Georgia, shot 68 on Sunday to finish in a group of four at -10. <\/p>\n

\u201cI hit it amazing today,\u201d Henley said. \u201cI gave myself a bunch of looks. Unfortunately, I didn\u2019t capitalize on those looks on the back like I would have liked to.<\/p>\n

\u201cI felt like I handled the pressure well, handled the conditions well. It was tricky out there. Just hit it great. Really thankful for a good finish. Wish I would have made some more putts and got a little closer to the lead, but overall very thankful.\u201d<\/p>\n

Joining Henley at -10 was Terrell Hatton of England. Also seeking his first major championship, Hatton carded a 66 on Sunday that included an eagle at No. 7. <\/p>\n

\u201cThis is my tenth Masters, so been fortunate to be here a lot and my results the last three years have definitely improved which is nice,\u201d Hatton said.<\/p>\n

Also at -10 was last year\u2019s runner-up Justin Rose, who shot 70 on Sunday to finish -10, three shots back. It is his third runner-up finish at Augusta. <\/p>\n

\u201cFelt like the crowd was amazing to me all week long,\u201d Rose said. \u201cThey pulled for me all week long. I felt their encouragement and support. At the end it kind of goes a little flat. It\u2019s more of a sympathy than anything.<\/p>\n

\u201cBut it was still nonetheless very beautiful. But, yeah, another little stinger, yeah.\u201d<\/p>\n

As for McIlroy, he feels like this is just the beginning.<\/p>\n

\u201cI said at the start of the weekend here I felt like the grand slam was the destination, and I realized it wasn\u2019t,\u201d he said. \u201cI\u2019m on this journey to \u2014 I don\u2019t know, I just won my sixth major, and I feel like I\u2019m in a really good spot with my game and my body.<\/p>\n

\u201cI don\u2019t want to put a number on it, but I feel like this win is just \u2014 I don\u2019t want to say a stop on the journey, but yeah, it\u2019s just a part of the journey. I still have things I want to achieve, but I still want to enjoy it as well.\u201d<\/p>\n
