{"id":30862,"date":"2026-07-02T19:26:16","date_gmt":"2026-07-02T19:26:16","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/golf\/30862\/"},"modified":"2026-07-02T19:26:16","modified_gmt":"2026-07-02T19:26:16","slug":"jon-rahm-confirmed-for-irish-open-field-at-doonbeg-as-he-seeks-third-title-the-irish-times","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/golf\/30862\/","title":{"rendered":"Jon Rahm confirmed for Irish Open field at Doonbeg as he seeks third title \u2013 The Irish Times"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/jon-rahm\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/jon-rahm\/\">Jon Rahm<\/a> has been confirmed to play in the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/irish-open\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/irish-open\/\">Irish Open<\/a> in Trump International Golf Links in Doonbeg, his first appearance in the event since winning at Lahinch in 2019.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">The Spaniard, a two-time champion of the event, said after winning that \u201cI\u2019m just glad I can defend this championship again\u201d and spoke of his love affair for playing in Ireland, but he did not return for the Covid-impacted edition in 2020 in Galgorm and has chosen not to play in it since then.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">However, after agreeing to settle \u20ac2.3 million in fines with the DP World Tour, and with the future of the LIV tour under question, Rahm will increase his appearances in Europe this year ahead of the Ryder Cup in September 2027 with the Irish Open in his schedule.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">The 31-year-old is a two-time winner, having also won at Portstewart in 2017, and he targets a third title to match his hero Seve Ballesteros.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">\u201cI\u2019m really looking forward to getting back to Ireland for the Amgen Irish Open,\u201d said Rahm. \u201cWinning this tournament twice means a lot to me and it\u2019s always a place I enjoy playing. The courses, the fans and the challenge of links golf make it a special week.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">The former world number one joins defending champion Rory McIlroy, Shane Lowry, Tyrrell Hatton, Rasmus H\u00f8jgaard among others in the event from September 10-13 in Co Clare.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">US president Donald Trump, who owns the property, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/politics\/2026\/07\/01\/i-think-im-going-to-come-over-for-irish-open-trump-tells-dublin-july-4th-party\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/politics\/2026\/07\/01\/i-think-im-going-to-come-over-for-irish-open-trump-tells-dublin-july-4th-party\/\">could also make an appearance<\/a>, after comments he made at a diplomatic event on Wednesday.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">\u201cWe have a place that\u2019s so top [Doonbeg], and we have the Irish Open going to be there and we\u2019re going to have a tremendous celebration. I think I\u2019m going to come over and I think I\u2019m going to see it and we\u2019re gonna watch Rory and all the great players,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Meanwhile, S\u00e9amus Power withdrew from the John Deere Classic on the PGA Tour with a back injury. The Waterford golfer started well with two birdies in his first nine holes but collapsed with 44 shots on the back nine as injury hit.
