OK, maybe that last one is just us golf tech nerds, but what we can surely surmise is that squishy things like feel and softness are lower on the ladder of importance when you\u2019re trying to breathe life into your dying game on the greens. If I can get something to drop my number of putts per round into the low 30s, I don\u2019t care what it looks like, let alone what it feels like.<\/p>\n
But maybe that\u2019s just because mallets used to be clunky and clanky. Not anymore. Whether it\u2019s milled steel or aluminum or faces that feature polymer inserts, the best mallets on the 2026 Hot List provide an ideal combination of the right sensory experience for optimal control of your putting stroke, while still providing the effective energy transfer that leads to smoother roll.<\/p>\n
What\u2019s interesting in trying to understand feel is the relationship between center of gravity and the golfer\u2019s ability to sense the putter head\u2019s position in space. That head and face angle awareness is really the foundation for ideal feel and control, and it\u2019s especially relevant in the current movement toward so-called \u201clow-\u201c or \u201czero-torque\u201d putter designs. These designs tend to position the head\u2019s center of gravity more in line with the shaft axis, which means it\u2019s often well-forward of traditional mallet putter designs. Generally, a more forward CG can feel firmer, but modern designs use different materials to make that feeling less harsh and indeed, the feeling of the head and shaft moving more in a more unified way might breed the solid, resilient feeling that many players have come to prefer.
