IOWA CITY, Iowa (KCRG) – Former NFL safety Micah Hyde returned to Iowa City for the second annual Micah Hyde Charity Golf Classic at Pleasant Valley Golf Course, bringing together past and present Iowa Hawkeyes to raise money for the Stead Family Children\u2019s Hospital.<\/p>\n
Hyde raised more than $50,000 at the inaugural event. The charity is partially run by students who were in the same class Hyde took while at the University of Iowa.<\/p>\n
Hyde on his motivation<\/p>\n
\u201cBeing a parent and seeing the kids have to go through stuff like they\u2019re going through, it\u2019s really heavy on my heart,\u201d Hyde said. \u201cSo I really try to do everything I can to put a smile on the kids\u2019 faces.\u201d<\/p>\n
Past patients, former Hawkeyes take part<\/p>\n
Past patients attended as kid captains, including Adeline Lovell, who battled leukemia. Lovell said she hopes to become a Hawkeye cheerleader and rated her cart wheels on the putting green as \u201cpretty good.\u201d<\/p>\n
Former nine-year NFL linebacker Christian Kirksey also made the trip back to Iowa City, and jokes about bringing his children along to see his old stomping grounds.<\/p>\n
\u201cMaybe go take them around Pancheros,\u201d Kirksey said. \u201cThat was my spot.\u201d<\/p>\n
Competitive spirit on the course<\/p>\n
The event drew competitive energy alongside its charitable mission. Kirksey arrived with confidence.<\/p>\n
\u201cListen, I\u2019ve been talking all morning about how good I am,\u201d Kirksey said. \u201cI got to back it up.\u201d<\/p>\n
Hyde matched the energy.<\/p>\n
\u201cI\u2019m probably going to be struggling, but I\u2019m going to be talking junk for sure,\u201d Hyde said.<\/p>\n
Wetjen reflects on putting contest<\/p>\n
Pittsburgh Steeler Kaden Wetjen, who received his NFL draft call on a golf course earlier this year, lost the putting contest to his former special teams coach, LeVar Woods.<\/p>\n
\u201cI\u2019m not a very good putter,\u201d Wetjen said. \u201cSo I wasn\u2019t expecting to win it, but it was still a pathetic performance by me. I\u2019m a little disappointed.\u201d<\/p>\n
