When Rory McIlroy<\/a> is gone, he\u2019s not particularly concerned about the impact he\u2019s left on the game of golf.\u00a0<\/p>\n

McIlroy, 37, was asked about his \u201clegacy past when you\u2019ll be on this Earth\u201d during a press conference on Tuesday, July 14<\/a>, ahead of the 2026 Open Championship at Royal Birkdale.<\/p>\n

\u201cI don\u2019t really care,\u201d McIlroy said. \u201cI would like to think that the people that love and care about me think a certain way of me. But I\u2019ll be long gone. I\u2019ll be dead.\u201d<\/p>\n

He added, \u201cI don\u2019t think I\u2019ll be seeing what people say about me. I\u2019ll be six feet under. I don\u2019t think I\u2019ll be a ghost.\u201d<\/p>\n

Scottie Scheffler<\/a> got similarly existential when he asked if he cares about his \u201clegacy\u201d on Tuesday.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201cI mean to be completely honest, not really,\u201d Scheffler, 30, told reporters<\/a> at Royal Birkdale. \u201cI don\u2019t really play for a place in history. I\u2019m not playing for anything like that. Because, this is going to sound a little morbid, but at the end of the day I\u2019m going to live my life and then it\u2019s going to end. And when it ends, I\u2019m going somewhere else and I\u2019m not going to be here anymore.\u201d<\/p>\n

Scheffler continued, \u201cLegacy and all that stuff was never really something that motivated me. For me, it was always competition. I loved playing golf. I loved waking up with butterflies because I\u2019m going out to play a tournament and I get a chance to compete today. I love those feelings, and when I retire, I\u2019m going to miss them.\u201d<\/p>\n

Ultimately, Scheffler confessed that he has \u201cnever once thought about how I\u2019m going to be remembered.\u201d<\/p>\n

Scheffler\u2019s comments came one year after he ruminated on his purpose ahead<\/a> of the 2025 Open Championship at Royal Portrush.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Still, Scheffler admitted that he isn\u2019t motivated to \u201cinspire somebody else to be the best player in the world.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cBecause what\u2019s the point?\u201d Scheffler questioned. \u201cThis is not a fulfilling life. It\u2019s fulfilling from the sense of accomplishment, but it\u2019s not fulfilling from the deepest places of your heart. There\u2019s a lot of people who make it to what they thought was going to fulfill them in life. Then you get there and all of a sudden you get to number one in the world and they\u2019re like, \u2018What\u2019s the point?\u2019\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n
