The new competitive model will feature a “Championship Series” of 23 or 24 events during the course of the season, and the PGA Tour announced the Travelers will be one of those starting in 2028.

“This has been an extremely successful tournament by every metric,” Brian Rolapp, the PGA Tour’s CEO and incoming commissioner, said during the Travelers in June. “Our members love it. Travelers is an amazing partner. We obviously have an affinity for this course. … I think they do a lot of things that we’re looking for in a Championship Series event.”

Dom Amore: As PGA Tour evolves, Travelers Championship expects to be, and should remain top-shelf

Signature Events were established four years ago, in response to the defection of many of the top golfers to Saudi-backed LIVGolf for large paydays. The field was cut down to about 80, with no cuts, and with the top golfers required to play in a certain number of Signature Events, the Travelers has gotten nearly all of them, including 49 of the top 50 ranked players on The Tour in 2026 to compete for the $20 million purse.

The Championship Series will assemble fields of about 120, closer to the old concept, with a cut down after two rounds.

“I think we’re moving in the right direction for sure,” said Scottie Scheffler, the No. 1 golfer in the world, during the Travelers. “I think what people want is to get the best players playing together more often. I’m not sure if the smaller fields were a huge fan favorite, so getting fields back to 120-man fields, getting a cut back, I think those are good changes. The more we can simplify it for people, the better, especially when you’re looking at tournaments stretched across an entire season. So kind of the simplifying of you’re going to see the same 120 guys most of the time at the same tournaments across the country for throughout our season. I think it’s easier for our fans to follow.

“I think the competition will get better. I think when you look at larger fields it will be much harder to win tournaments.”

The full slate of Championship Series events and the dates they will be played will be revealed at a later date. The plan is for 23 or 24, including The Players Championship, the four major championships, postseason events and international team events, such as the Presidents Cup and Ryder Cup. The regular PGA Tour season will run from February through August. The purse is expected to be similar to Signature Events, but is bound to rise over time.

Rolapp, who came from the NFL, took over the business side of the PGA a year ago before succeeding Jay Monahan as commissioner. With a background in TV rights revenue, he has floated the idea of having more events, particularly championship events, in major markets, including New York and Boston. Currently, the Travelers is the only Tour stop in the Northeast.

Dom Amore: World’s best golfer will lament one that got away at Travelers Championship

But at the outset, Connecticut will remain in the top tier of the new structure.

“Our goal every year is for the Travelers Championship to be one of the best tournaments on the PGA Tour, so being part of the upcoming Championship Series is validation of the collective effort that Travelers, the tournament team, fans and volunteers have invested over the past two decades,” said Andy Bessette, executive VP and chief administrative officer at Travelers. “We thank the Tour for this opportunity and are excited to partner with them on working hard to deliver a world-class experience.”

The PGA has stopped in Connecticut since 1952, with the Greater Hartford Open at Wethersfield CC, moving to the redesigned TPC in Cromwell in 1984. Several title sponsors came and went before The Travelers took over in 2007.
