Johnson Wagner believes that while some will vote for Scottie Scheffler to be PGA Tour Player of the Year, the opportunity to opt for someone else for a change will tempt many to look elsewhere. <\/p>\n

Scheffler is in an unusual position heading into the FedEx Cup playoffs. Over the previous few seasons, the world number one has been dominant, winning the Player of the Year in each of the last four years.<\/p>\n

However, the 2026 season has been a lot tougher for Scheffler. While he won The American Express on his first start of the year, the 30-year-old has failed to add to his tally of victories. <\/p>\n

Scheffler has finished second five times. Meanwhile, the likes of Chris Gotterup<\/a>, Matthew Fitzpatrick<\/a>, Cameron Young<\/a>, and Wyndham Clark<\/a> have all won multiple times. <\/p>\n

Johnson Wagner says why Scottie Scheffler may not win the PGA Tour Player of the Year<\/p>\n

There is no question that Scheffler has to be in the conversation when it comes to the Player of the Year. <\/p>\n

However, speaking on CBS Sports<\/a>, Johnson Wagner<\/a> suggested that he expects a new name to be added to the trophy as things stand. <\/p>\n

\u201cThat\u2019s such a hard one, because he\u2019s had five runner-up finishes. He\u2019s been in multiple playoffs. He\u2019s seemingly in the hunt in every major championship,\u201d he said. <\/p>\n

\u201cPatrick talked about Cam Young, and I agree with you, Cam Young should be the Player of the Year right now, but there\u2019s going to be lots of people voting for Scottie because of that consistency, because of his major championship finishes. I think though, when it comes down to it, if he doesn\u2019t get hot in the playoffs and win at least two of those, it\u2019s going to go somewhere else just because, what would it be, five years in a row? I think players are going to take this opportunity to give it to somebody else.\u201d<\/p>\n

What Rory McIlroy has to do to win PGA Tour Player of the Year<\/p>\n

Another player likely to receive a number of votes is Rory McIlroy<\/a>. The Northern Irishman last won the award back in 2019. <\/p>\n

He has not played a great deal on the PGA Tour this season. Nevertheless, he managed to retain his title at The Masters<\/a>, becoming only the fourth player to ever win at Augusta National in successive years. <\/p>\n

However, Wagner believes that it would require McIlroy to win the Tour Championship later this month to be a serious contender.<\/p>\n

\u201cWith no multiple major winners this year, if Rory can go on and win the FedEx Cup, sure, that could do it. But he won\u2019t even have played 15 events. Is he even eligible for Player of the Year? Do we have stats for him? Has he played enough events to have a full statistical profile? It\u2019s shocking,\u201d he said. <\/p>\n

\u201cI was just having this conversation with somebody the other day, the Memorial Tournament is the last time we saw him play a PGA Tour event in the United States, so it\u2019s been a long time.\u201d<\/p>\n

It would be no surprise to see Scheffler and McIlroy bounce back in a big way in 2027. <\/p>\n

Few would have anticipated that they would win one major between them this year, while also only securing two victories overall. <\/p>\n

This season marks the first time that neither Scheffler nor McIlroy have won a signature event on the PGA Tour. <\/p>\n

Both men will probably go into 2027 feeling that they have a point to prove. <\/p>\n
