CLIFTON PARK, N.Y. \u2014 Red Hook Golf Club head professional Chris Sanger finished in fifth place in the Northeastern New York (NENY) PGA Section\u2019s Professional Championship on Tuesday, August 4 at the Eagle Crest Golf Club in Clifton Park, New York.<\/p>\n
Sanger, a 2021 Woodstock Open champion, fired an even-par 72 to finish two strokes behind winner Michael Shine, an assistant pro at the Glens Falls Country Club, who had a 2-under 70.<\/p>\n
Shine bested assistant pro Jake Mrochinski of The Country Club of Troy in a one-hole playoff after Mrochinski also posted a 70.<\/p>\n
Shine and Mrochinski landed the section\u2019s two berths in the 2027 PGA Professional Championship that will take place April 28-28, 2027, at the Streamstrong Golf Resort in Bowling Green, Florida. The top 20 finishers at the club professional championship will receive spots in the 2027 PGA Championship from May 20-23 at Fields Ranch East at PGA Frisco in Frisco, Texas.<\/p>\n
The PGA Championship is the second major in professional golf, following the Masters in April 2027.<\/p>\n
Windham Country Club head pro Jesse Muller, who fired a 1-under 71, earned the first alternate spot in a separate playoff on Tuesday.<\/p>\n
Sanger, who was 4-over-par through 13 holes, rallied to birdie four of the remaining five holes to post a 72. But he came up one shot out of a playoff spot for an alternate position for the national club pro event.<\/p>\n
The NENY PGA event was cut from 36 holes to 18 due to heavy rains that hit an already saturated golf course on Monday.<\/p>\n
With his fifth-place finish in one of the section\u2019s five majors, Sanger remains atop the Player of the Year standings with 1,557.5 points. Robert Cain of Saratoga National Golf Club is next with 1,329.17 points, followed in third by Shine with 1,182 points.<\/p>\n
Sanger won his first Player of the Year award in the section last season when he was the head pro at the Woodstock Golf Club. He took over as head pro at the Red Hook club at the beginning of 2026.<\/p>\n
