The biggest story at The Open Championship was Bryson DeChambeau\u2019s rules violation during his second round.<\/p>\n

Ryan Fox winning The Open was captivating in its own right, but DeChambeau still managed to steal the show.<\/p>\n

Rory McIlroy was extremely outspoken in the aftermath of the DeChambeau fiasco at Royal Birkdale, and now Scottie Scheffler has had his say on the Northern Irishman\u2019s comments.<\/p>\n

DeChambeau was penalized two strokes at The Open<\/a> after it was deemed that he cleared the pathway to the back of his ball in the rough on the fifth hole during his second round.<\/p>\n

McIlroy<\/a> certainly did not hold back when speaking about DeChambeau<\/a>\u2018s actions at The Open Championship<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Rory McIlroy suggested that he\u2019s no fan of Bryson DeChambeau<\/a> when speaking to the press on Saturday at Birkdale.<\/p>\n

\u201cLate night for everyone. Yeah, look, I won\u2019t pretend to be up here and defend Bryson. I\u2019m not particularly fond of him. I think a lot of it\u2019s performative. I think a lot of it\u2019s for attention.\u201c he said.<\/p>\n

\u201cTo hold the tournament hostage like that, and to have all of us, players, volunteers, everyone waiting on him to depart, I didn\u2019t feel like it was a great look.<\/p>\n

\u201cLook, he\u2019s going to say \u2014 like, again, I\u2019m not in his mind. I\u2019m not in his \u2014 but it didn\u2019t look good.\u201c<\/p>\n

What Scottie Scheffler said about Bryson DeChambeau incident<\/p>\n

Scheffler<\/a> shared his opinion on the matter after his final round on Sunday.<\/p>\n

\u201cI think that opens up a greater discussion that \u2014 all I can really say is I think maybe we need to be a little bit more strict in the way that we are policing guys, but it\u2019s a little bit of a balance because you\u2019ve got certain guys like a Bryson who every shot he hits is going to be shown on TV,\u201c he said.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhen you have camera angles that are far away, things can look different than they do when you\u2019re right there.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe\u2019ve done a good job of \u2014 I don\u2019t know, I hate saying stuff out here because I don\u2019t want anything to get taken out of context. All I\u2019ll say is Bryson, I\u2019ve known him for a long time, and he\u2019s a lot of things, but he\u2019s definitely not a cheater.<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019ve never seen him cheat once, whether we were having a putting contest on the putting green or chipping contest, or anytime we played amateur golf, I never saw anything suspicious.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhen you\u2019re watching him there from that camera angle, maybe he was a touch careless around his ball, but I don\u2019t think he did anything intentionally.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe\u2019ve seen penalties happen with \u2014 like you remember Jon Rahm a couple years ago at the Memorial when his ball moved in the rough, and it\u2019s like to the naked eye, can you really tell that?<\/p>\n

\u201cI think sometimes it\u2019s just a difficult position in the game of golf. When I was growing up, if this was the line between things that were \u2014 like if this was the line, here are the rules and this was the right side of it and this is when you\u2019re doing things against the rule, you always tried to stray really far that way. I feel like at times, sometimes you see players maybe push it a little bit further than they should.\u201c<\/p>\n

And now Scheffler has offered a response when asked directly about McIlroy taking a personal swipe at DeChambeau.<\/p>\n

The world number one addressed the media in Minnesota on Wednesday ahead of the start of the 3M Open.<\/p>\n

He responded when asked by one reporter what he made of McIlroy\u2019s \u2018personal jabs\u2019 at DeChambeau.<\/p>\n

\u201cI think golf\u2019s different in a sense of a lot of other sports because my biggest rival week in and week out is the golf course that we\u2019re playing,\u201c the 30-year-old said. <\/p>\n

\u201cI mean, I could never stop somebody from doing anything in golf. I felt like when I played basketball there would always be rivalries in basketball because you\u2019re going to play defence against a person and that is much more personal in a sense like because I\u2019m actively trying to stop \u2014 like if you and I were going to go out and play one-on-one, like it would turn into a rivalry because I\u2019m actively trying to stop what you\u2019re doing, but in golf, we\u2019re always competing against ourselves on the golf course.<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019ve never been a big fan of personal jabs. I don\u2019t think that rivalry is a big thing in golf just because, like I said, my biggest rivalry week in and week out is the golf course.\u201c<\/p>\n

Rory McIlroy shouldn\u2019t have stooped to personal insults when discussing the Bryson DeChambeau fiasco at The Open.<\/p>\n

What he had to say about the two-stroke penalty was correct, but the \u2018I\u2019m not particularly fond of him\u2019 line made his main point seem less poignant.<\/p>\n
