To eliminate any re-routing or sideways movement of the club in transition. What looks like a pause is actually perfect timing: The backswing fully completes, the lower body is already starting to shift, the upper body stays patient for a split second. That tiny separation is everything. It creates sequence. It creates space. It creates effortless speed. Most amateurs rush from the top and throw everything at the ball at once. He came into the <a href=\"https:\/\/sportsdata.usatoday.com\/golf\/pga\/leaderboard\/5008433\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" data-t-l=\":b|e|k|\u2691u\" class=\"gnt_ar_b_a\">Wyndham Championship<\/a> as the pre-tournament favorite.<\/p>\n<p class=\"gnt_ar_b_p\">His fundamentals are solid but not everyone agrees that his hesitation at the top of the swing is something to copy. He makes it work but in the history of the game, only a handful of players have been able to pull off that move \u2013 among them Cary Middlecoff, the winningest player on Tour in the 1950s, Nancy Lopez, who dominated the LPGA for much of the 1970s and \u201880s, and more recently Hideki Matsuyama, the 2021 Masters champion.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>More: <a href=\"http:\/\/golfweek.usatoday.com\/story\/sports\/golf\/pga\/2026\/08\/05\/cameron-young-set-to-defend-title-at-2026-wyndham-championship\/91171675007\/\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" data-t-l=\":b|e|spike click:10|\u2691u\" class=\"gnt_ar_b_sp_a\">Cameron Young makes first PGA Tour title defense of his career at Wyndham Championship<\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"gnt_ar_b_p\">Legendary pro\u00a0Tommy Armour devoted a chapter in his 1954 instruction book entitled \u201cHow to Play Your Best Golf All the Time,\u201d to making a hesitation at the top of the backswing to stop from rushing, improve transition sequencing and gain control of the club before starting the downswing.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"gnt_ar_b_p\">But some teachers advocate no transition.
