Xander Schauffele is in contention for a third career major win at the US Open after a fantastic second round.<\/p>\n

Schauffele carded a four-under 66 to finish on three-under after two days of the tournament at Shinnecock Hills.<\/p>\n

The American has yet to win the US Open, instead claiming his two major wins at the PGA Championship and The Open Championship, both in 2024.<\/p>\n

But Schauffele<\/a> is now very much among the favorites to lift the trophy this week, having finished his second day of the US Open<\/a> in a tie for second.<\/p>\n

He entered the clubhouse four shots behind leader Wyndham Clark, who he was tasked with discussing after his round, when he also made a big reference to Scottie Scheffler<\/a>.<\/p>\n

It was put to Schauffele at Shinnecock Hills<\/a> that Clark used the analogy of climbing Mount Everest after his second round, which he himself has previously alluded to.<\/p>\n

Suggesting where he now is in the climb to get in and around number one, Schauffele said: \u201cYeah, I feel like I almost have to create\u2026 if Scottie is at the top of a mountain, I almost have to talk about a different\u2026 you know, Mount Everest is maybe too high of a summit at this current time.<\/p>\n

\u201cScottie has really pulled himself away from the world.<\/p>\n

\u201cThat\u2019s a conversation for a different time.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhatever mountain I decide to be on, I\u2019m trying to climb it, for sure, and just trying to chip away each and every day.\u201d<\/p>\n

While he hasn\u2019t enjoyed a strong start to this year\u2019s US Open, Scheffler has undoubtedly set the standard in world golf in recent years.<\/p>\n

Ranked number one in the world, he won both the PGA Championship and The Open last year, along with The Masters in 2022 and 2024.<\/p>\n

While Scheffler has been the dominant force on the PGA Tour for some time, Schauffele has also impressed, but he has been enduring a dry spell of late.<\/p>\n

Injuries have, however, played a major role in his lack of wins, with his most recent having arrived at the 2025 Baycurrent Classic.<\/p>\n

Sharing what a win at the US Open would mean to him and his dad, he said: \u201cYeah, I mean, I\u2019d like to think my dad is pretty happy, but you know, anyone that\u2019s able to hold this trophy knows, you know, how hard it is to win.<\/p>\n

\u201cTo sort of be the last man standing, you\u2019re basically going to war every day.<\/p>\n

\u201cTo be the last man standing with your team, I don\u2019t know what it feels like, but I can imagine it feels pretty special.<\/p>\n

\u201cI would love to know what that feels like.\u201d<\/p>\n

It\u2019s a very fair assessment from the American, who right now looks to be among the players who could battle it out for the prestigious trophy come Sunday.<\/p>\n

He\u2019s certainly been one of the standout performers at the tournament over the years, with the 32-year-old boasting a simply stunning US Open record.<\/p>\n

Schauffele has finished outside the top 10 just twice in his nine appearances, and even then it was in T12 and T14.<\/p>\n
