Josh Stein’s signature Tuesday of House Bill 268 that allocates $10 million annually to the tournament for four years.

The move makes a huge victory for the Triad, which had feared the loss of its major pro sporting event as the PGA realigns its schedule to feature 23 or 24 major tournaments attracting the tour’s 120 top players. The state’s third-largest metro area doesn’t have an NBA or NFL team, like Charlotte, or an NHL team, like Raleigh.

The Greensboro event will continue to be led by the Piedmont Triad Charitable Foundation and be held at Sedgefield Country Club, which is owned by Raleigh-based McConnell Golf.

In addition to the state subsidy, the Triad scored by landing a sponsorship with St. Petersburg, Florida-based Raymond James, one of the largest U.S. wealth management companies. Terms and length of the contract were not revealed. CEO Paul Shoukry attended the Greensboro tournament last weekend.

The tournament started as the Greater Greensboro Open in 1938. For 20 years, it has been sponsored by the Wyndham hospitality chain.

Charlotte’s annual Truist Championship is also expected to be part of the tour’s Championship Series, though a formal announcement has not been made. It had a purse of $20 million last year, more than double the level of the Wyndham Championship.

The tournament will now be called the GO by Raymond James and is scheduled for Aug. 2-8, 2017. Sedgefield has hosted the event since 2008. There has been some unconfirmed speculation that the event may be moved to the spring.

“The PGA Tour has extensive history in Greensboro and central North Carolina, and we are eager to watch its next chapter unfold alongside our new partners at Raymond James,” Mark Brazil, CEO of the Piedmont Triad Charitable Foundation, said in a release.

“The PGA Tour’s Greensboro event has one of the richest histories in men’s professional golf, and we are proud to continue building on its longstanding legacy and local charitable impact with the support of our new partners at Raymond James,” added Dhruv Prasad, PGA Tour’s chief commercial officer.

The PGA Tour said the Raymond James financial services firm has agreed to make the annual Greensboro event…

[5
44,19263,531,144,19264
post-49588","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","category-pga-championship","tag-golf","tag-greensboro","tag-pga-championship","tag-pga-tour","tag-raymond-james
["GET
