(WTNH) \u2014 Fans arrived early and waited through rain delays as the Travelers Championship wrapped up with a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wtnh.com\/sports\/travelers-championship\/travelers-championship-goes-to-monday-playoff-between-scottie-scheffler-and-viktor-hovland\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Monday playoff<\/a> following storms that disrupted Sunday\u2019s final round.<\/p>\n<p>Spectators lined up in the early morning fog, some nearly two hours before tee time. Many returned after Sunday\u2019s weather delays, including 12-year-old Landry Koafehn, who left with a memorable moment after receiving a souvenir from Scottie Scheffler\u2019s caddie.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe caddie walks by, and a bunch of my family said, \u2018Hook him up! Hook him up!\u2019 And then the caddy handed it to me,\u201d Koafehn said.<\/p>\n<p>Storms rolled through the area Sunday, bringing heavy rain, thunder, and lightning that forced a delay of about an hour and a half.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe were absolutely drenched, and then we heard the horn,\u201d Koafehn said. \u201cSo, we were all right going back to the car.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Fans described rapidly changing conditions, with one golfer joking about unintentionally summoning the rain.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt was so hot that I mistakenly said, \u2018It would be nice to get a little sprinkle,\u2019\u201d said Tama Parsons, a golf fan. \u201cAnd my husband said, \u2018Why did you even say that?\u2019 It turned into a downpour.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Sunday\u2019s delays stretched the day well into the evening, leaving fans guessing when play would resume.<\/p>\n<p>\t<a href=\"https:\/\/www.wtnh.com\/sports\/travelers-championship\/travelers-championship-goes-to-monday-playoff-between-scottie-scheffler-and-viktor-hovland\/?ipid=promo-link-block1\" class=\"promo-link__link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\"><br \/>\n\t\tViktor Hovland wins Travelers Championship in Monday playoff\t<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt got a little weird there,\u201d said Joe Kulesza of Torrington. \u201cYou start doing the math in your head, you see the time, and you know it takes a while to get the course ready and get the guys back out there.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>When Scottie Scheffler and Viktor Hovland finished tied at the end of regulation, the sudden-death playoff was postponed until Monday \u2014 something tournament organizers anticipated.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou know the history here at the tournament. We do have a likelihood of a playoff,\u201d said Brian Zimmerli, a walking scoring chair at the event. \u201cIt\u2019s an exciting finish, normally. A lot of players come down to the wire, so we prepare for the playoff.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>With just two players competing, only one walking scorer was needed as fans returned Monday morning for the finish under clear skies.<\/p>\n<p>The playoff came down to two putts.<\/p>\n<p>Hovland made his from about seven feet, while Scheffler missed from four feet, sealing the win.<\/p>\n<p>For fans, the extended weekend was memorable \u2014 even as it stretched into Monday and disrupted teardown plans at the course.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"CROMWELL, Conn.
