NurPhoto via Getty Images <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph sections-events-and-attractions \">The PGA Tour has assigned the Memorial Tournament \u201cto the top-tier Championship Series\u201d beginning in 2028. The Memorial, played annually at Muirfield Village Golf Club in late May or early June, \u201canticipated it would receive Championship Series status\u201d considering it already operated as one of eight PGA Tour Signature Events \u201cwith smaller fields and richer purses.\u201d But \u201cnothing was official until the tour gave final approval\u201d (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.dispatch.com\/story\/sports\/pga\/2026\/08\/17\/pga-tour-names-memorial-tournament-a-top-tier-championship-series-stop\/91331939007\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.dispatch.com\/story\/sports\/pga\/2026\/08\/17\/pga-tour-names-memorial-tournament-a-top-tier-championship-series-stop\/91331939007\/\">COLUMBUS DISPATCH, 8\/17<\/a>). It stood to reason that the tournament hosted by World Golf HOFer Jack Nicklaus \u201ceventually would join the ranks\u201d of the new Championship Series\u202fthat begins in 2028, given its longtime reputation \u201cas one of golf\u2019s premier events.\u201d The Memorial is the second of the three invitationals on the PGA Tour to commit to the higher of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sportsbusinessjournal.com\/Articles\/2026\/06\/23\/pga-tour-unveils-radical-new-two-tiered-structure-beginning-in-2028\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.sportsbusinessjournal.com\/Articles\/2026\/06\/23\/pga-tour-unveils-radical-new-two-tiered-structure-beginning-in-2028\/\">the two proposed tiers that tour CEO Brian Rolapp announced in June<\/a>, joining the Arnold Palmer Invitational. Almost \u201ccertain to follow suit will be the third,\u201d the Genesis Invitational hosted by Tiger Woods. The 2027 Memorial is scheduled for May 31-June 6.
