{"id":53985,"date":"2026-08-21T18:15:09","date_gmt":"2026-08-21T18:15:09","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/golf\/53985\/"},"modified":"2026-08-21T18:15:09","modified_gmt":"2026-08-21T18:15:09","slug":"sergio-garcia-may-have-cost-liv-golf-its-funding-as-bombshell-report-emerges","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/golf\/53985\/","title":{"rendered":"Sergio Garcia may have cost LIV Golf its funding as bombshell report emerges"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Sergio Garcia might be partly responsible for the Saudi Public Investment Fund&#8217;s decision to stop financing LIV Golf.<\/p>\n<p>Saudi Arabia&#8217;s Public Investment Fund (PIF) withdrew their funding from the breakaway <a href=\"https:\/\/talksport.com\/topic\/liv-golf\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">LIV Golf<\/a> tour earlier this month.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"#\"><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"LIV Golf signage in front of trees at the LIV Golf Mexico City event at Club de Golf Chapultepec\" height=\"640\" width=\"960\" data-credit=\"Getty\" data-img=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/golf\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/liv-golf-signage-seen-day-1102532109.jpg\" data-caption=\"LIV Golf is searching for new investment after PIF pulled out\"   loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/golf\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/liv-golf-signage-seen-day-1102532109.jpg\" role=\"img\"\/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>2<\/p>\n<p>LIV Golf is searching for new investment after PIF pulled outCredit: GettyGarcia to blame?<\/p>\n<p>And it&#8217;s emerged that Garcia&#8217;s actions at the Masters in April could have played a part in PIF&#8217;s call.<\/p>\n<p>The 2017 Masters winner damaged a tee box at the 2026 edition of the iconic championship at Augusta National.<\/p>\n<p>And according to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ft.com\/content\/d286cb7f-c63e-42a6-86db-d0a9ad0f296a?syn-25a6b1a6=1\" target=\"_blank\" aria-label=\" (opens in a new tab)\" rel=\"nofollow noreferrer noopener\">Financial Times<\/a>, PIF governor Yasir Al-Rumayyan didn&#8217;t take too kindly to the incident.<\/p>\n<p>The article read: &#8220;In April, as LIV golfers floundered at the Masters, golf&#8217;s most prestigious tournament, Spanish star Sergio Garcia damaged the Augusta National course during a fit of rage in the final round.<\/p>\n<p>READ MORE ON TALKSPORT<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;People familiar with the matter Rumayyan&#8217;s embarrassment at the sequence of events helped lead to his decision to pull the plug on PIF&#8217;s financing of the rival tour, as the fund focuses more on its huge domestic commitments in [Saudi Arabia].<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;LIV declined to comment.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>McIlroy speaks out<\/p>\n<p>Founded as a rival to the <a href=\"https:\/\/talksport.com\/topic\/pga-tour\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">PGA Tour<\/a> in 2021, beginning play the following year, LIV Golf has attracted some of the sport&#8217;s biggest names.<\/p>\n<p>Equally, other prominent players have steered clear, including six-time major champion <a href=\"https:\/\/talksport.com\/who\/rory-mcilroy\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Rory McIlroy<\/a> \u2013 who <a href=\"https:\/\/talksport.com\/golf\/4180075\/rory-mcilroy-wins-the-masters-tiger-woods-scottie-scheffler\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">successfully defended his Masters title this year<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>And asked recently about speculation that some LIV golfers could try to return to the PGA Tour, McIlroy replied: &#8220;I would argue, have they brought value to LIV? I thought Scottie [Scheffler] answered the question well, and Rory\u2019s answer was just typical of Rory, really.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;It wasn\u2019t well thought out. There are a lot of players on this tour who bring value to tournaments.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>LIV Golf&#8217;s &#8216;next chapter&#8217;<\/p>\n<p>Despite the blow of PIF&#8217;s withdrawal, LIV Golf chief executive Scott O&#8217;Neil is hopeful about the competition&#8217;s survival.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;My confidence level is high [that LIV Golf will survive] because the facts are good,&#8221; he told the media as players heard from a prospective new investor, widely reported to be Ted Goldthorpe, co-founder of international investment firm BC Partners.<\/p>\n<p>O&#8217;Neil also confirmed <a href=\"https:\/\/talksport.com\/golf\/4489571\/liv-golf-jon-rahm-majority-owner-bankruptcy\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">speculation that players themselves could be offered a stake in the tour<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;This next chapter is fundamentally different, he said. &#8220;We are building towards a league majority owned by its players.
