Their reasons for needing it are not remotely the same.

Clark followed an opening 64 with another 6-under 64 Friday, reaching 12-under 128 without making a bogey. Woodland backed up his own 64 with a bogey-free 65, leaving him alone in second at 11 under.

J.J. Spaun, the 2025 U.S. Open champion, sits two shots behind Clark. Chris Gotterup and Sungjae Im are three back at 9 under.

That puts three U.S. Open winners in the first three positions, but the weekend’s most compelling pairing belongs to the top two.

Clark and Woodland will play together in Saturday’s final group at 1:50 p.m. ET. Clark can strengthen an already powerful Player of the Year argument and earn his way onto the U.S. Presidents Cup team. Woodland arrived at Bellerive with his season on the edge and now has an opportunity to send it all the way to East Lake.

The BMW trophy is important to both. What it would change is where their stories separate.

   Beyond the Leaderboard
Two Players, Two Kinds of Pressure

       Wyndham Clark
-12
The opportunity

        12 birdies and no bogeys
Entered No. 7 in U.S. Presidents Cup standings
Chasing his third victory of 2026
Already qualified for East Lake

       Gary Woodland
-11
The necessity

Entered the week No. 31 in FedExCup points
Projected to move to No. 17
Closed Friday birdie-birdie
Seeking his first Tour Championship since 2019

FedExCup positions remain projected and will change with the final 36 holes.

Clark’s “Boring Golf” Is Carrying Bigger Stakes

Clark has made 12 birdies and no bogeys through 36 holes. He has hit 31 of 36 greens in regulation and has been forced to scramble only five times, converting each opportunity.

His opening 64 was built around a back-nine 30. Friday’s round was more evenly distributed, with matching 32s on each side.

“Felt great,” Clark said. “Really drove it nicely. I hit some awesome iron shots throughout the day where a couple times I didn’t really even have to putt.”

Clark called it “really nice boring golf,” which is about the highest compliment a player can give his own work.

Boring does not mean easy. It means the round has been stripped of unnecessary stress. Fairways lead to controlled approaches. Controlled approaches eliminate difficult recoveries. Pars stop feeling like escapes.

Even his most uncomfortable Friday assignments became small victories. Clark acknowledged that fairway-bunker shots have traditionally created uncertainty for him. He successfully handled them at Nos. 12, 14 and 18.

“Mentally I go in there with a little bit of fear, unknown how I’m going to hit the shot,” Clark said. “To pull ’em off and overcome that is great.”

That is a revealing window into the player Clark has become. Confidence at this level does not require pretending a weakness no longer exists. It comes from identifying the discomfort, trusting the work and producing the shot anyway.

Clark has already secured his place in next week’s Tour Championship. His unfinished business involves the Presidents Cup.

He entered the BMW at No. 7 in the U.S. standings, one position outside the six automatic qualifiers. Those spots will be finalized after Sunday’s round.

“I thought I had to play really good to try to get into that top six,” Clark said. “And that’s where I want to be. I don’t want to leave it up to a captain’s choice.”

A victory would be Clark’s third of 2026, following the CJ Cup Byron Nelson and his second U.S. Open title at Shinnecock Hills. It would also make his candidacy for the season’s top individual honor considerably harder to dismiss.

One shot separates Wyndham Clark from Gary Woodland at Bellerive Country Club.
