LOUIS \u2013 Jamie Mulligan knows exactly how long it has been since his star pupil Patrick Cantlay last won.<\/p>\n<p class=\"gnt_ar_b_p\">\u201cTo the day,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"gnt_ar_b_p\">It doesn\u2019t require too much math. Cantlay won the 2022 BMW Championship, repeating as champion, for his eighth career PGA Tour title when it was held at Wilmington Country Club in Delaware four years ago to the day. Or as Mulligan can attest: 1,461 days ago.<\/p>\n<p><a class=\"gnt_em gnt_em_gl gnt_em__el\" href=\"http:\/\/golfweek.usatoday.com\/picture-gallery\/sports\/golf\/pga\/2026\/08\/20\/bmw-championship-2026-best-photos-bellerive-st-louis\/91388232007\/\" data-t-l=\"\u2691g:l|l|c|view gallery:inline promo\" aria-label=\"View Gallery - BMW Championship 2026: Best photos from Bellerive in St. Louis\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\"><img class=\"gnt_em_gl_i\" data-g-r=\"lazy\" data-gl-src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/golf\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/1787398356_859_91394836007-getty-images-2291332278.jpg\" data-gl- decoding=\"async\" alt=\"\" width=\"660\" height=\"372\"\/><\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"gnt_ar_b_p\">\u201cIt\u2019s hard to win and we haven\u2019t played perfectly great, but great\u2019s in there, you already know that,\u201d Mulligan said on Friday before he and Cantlay delved into a post-round wedge session on the range at the 2026 <a href=\"https:\/\/sportsdata.usatoday.com\/golf\/pga\/leaderboard\/5008435\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" data-t-l=\":b|e|k|\u2691u\" class=\"gnt_ar_b_a\">BMW Championship<\/a>. \u201cHe was impressive today. Didn&#8217;t make many putts,\u201d he said. \u201cThen got going on the back nine. It was really nice to finish with a couple birdies, especially after a 3-putt on 16.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"gnt_ar_b_p\">Cantlay, 34, rolled in four birdies in the first five holes on the back nine, slipped out of the trance he was in momentarily at 16, where he missed a 4-footer for a bogey, and birdied the final two holes for an eight-birdie, 5-under 65 at Bellerive Country Club.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><img class=\"gnt_em_img_i\" style=\"height:441px\" fetchpriority=\"high\" data-g-r=\"lazy\" data-gl-src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/golf\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/91409438007-pice.jpg\" data-gl- decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Patrick Cantlay lines up a putt on the seventh green during the second round of the 2026 BMW Championship at Bellerive Country Club.\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"gnt_ar_b_p\">It\u2019s been a pedestrian season by Cantlay\u2019s high standard. While he recorded 10 top 25s in the 14 times he made the cut this season, his best result is T-7 at the Valspar Championship. His best result at a major was at the Masters, where he finished T-12 after opening with 77. But he missed the cut at the <a data-autotag=\"3813e506-e3f2-417f-b754-63293413ce52\" href=\"https:\/\/sportsdata.usatoday.com\/golf\/pga\/us-open\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\" data-t-l=\":b|e|k|\u2691u\" class=\"gnt_ar_b_a\">U.S. Open<\/a> and was a non-factor at the other two majors (T-35 at the PGA and T-28 at the British).<\/p>\n<p class=\"gnt_ar_b_p\">The 2019 <a data-autotag=\"e13e5562-2c23-42c1-b3b8-d1f86ca9977b\" href=\"https:\/\/sportsdata.usatoday.com\/golf\/pga\/fedex-cup\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\" data-t-l=\":b|e|k|\u2691u\" class=\"gnt_ar_b_a\">FedEx Cup<\/a> champion is in danger of missing the top 30 cutoff for the Tour Championship for the first time since 2020, and the only time he hasn\u2019t made the field in Atlanta since 2017. Cantlay entered this week at No. 43 and has work to do to extend his streak.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"gnt_ar_b_p\">\u201cI would say almost regardless of where I&#8217;m at, top of the FedEx Cup or on the bubble, I don&#8217;t really think about it,\u201d he said. \u201cI definitely know the best way to move up that board is to play well this week and so I just put all my attention there.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"gnt_ar_b_p\">He\u2019s also on the outside looking in for qualifying for the U.S. Presidents Cup team, entering the week at No. 17 in the standings with the top six automatically making the team at the conclusion of the BMW on Sunday. Should the putter stay hot after shooting 8-under 132 at the midway point of the championship, he could make it hard for U.S. Captain Brandt Snedeker to not pick one of the stalwarts of the last three winning teams (2019, 2022, &#8217;24 with a 10-4-0 career record) after next week.<\/p>\n<p class=\"gnt_ar_b_p\">But Cantlay is only focused on the things he can control this week and ending his victory drought. He admitted that it feels like a long time since he won the BMW four years ago.<\/p>\n<p><img class=\"gnt_em_cp_cw_i\" data-g-r=\"lazy\" data-gl-src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/golf\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/1787398356_535_85613620007-bmwtrophies.jpg\" data-gl- decoding=\"async\" alt=\"\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"gnt_ar_b_p\">\u201cIt comes in stretches.
