The BMW Championship crowned a new winner on Sunday as Rory McIlroy found himself in title contention once again on the PGA Tour\"Wyndham<\/p>\n

Wyndham Clark almost let an almighty lead slip but held on to win the BMW Championship<\/a> by three strokes on Sunday. Rory McIlroy<\/a> had closed the gap on the American heading into the final few holes, but Clark upped his game to seal the \u00a32.6million top prize.<\/p>\n

The BMW Championship was held at Missouri’s Bellerive Country Club for the 2026 edition, with Scottie Scheffler<\/a> the defending champion. However, it was his compatriot Clark who got off to a fast start with an opening 64, alongside the likes of McIlroy and Gary Woodland.<\/a><\/p>\n

The US Open winner then took up the solo lead after round two and didn’t look back. Despite entering the last day five shots clear of McIlroy, the Northern Irishman did close the gap. But three birdies on the final three holes from Clark meant McIlroy had to settle for third<\/a> and Patrick Cantlay finished as runner-up.<\/p>\n

However, McIlroy made an error on 17 that he later branded “stupid” as Mirror Sport brings you all the latest news from the world of golf.<\/a><\/p>\n

Rory McIlroy’s “stupid” decision<\/p>\n

Having cut Clark’s lead down on the final day, McIlroy entered the par-five 17th just one stroke behind the American. But he found the rough off the tee and went bunker to bunker after a misexecuted lay-up.<\/p>\n

McIlroy’s tournament hopes were ended with a bogey, and he lamented his decision whilst speaking to CBS Sports. He said: “I tried to get it up a bit too far. I should have been taking that left bunker out of play.<\/p>\n

“If you’re going to lay it up, lay it up, so just another stupid decision with a lay-up on a par-five that cost me. I can’t be too disappointed. I’m probably not playing well enough to be disappointed that I didn’t win.<\/p>\n

“I had my chances on the back nine and hit a lot of good putts that didn’t go in. Wyndham Clark stepped up when he needed to. His birdie on 16 was huge and the way he played the last three holes, he showed a lot of character.”<\/p>\n

Golfer clashes with a fan<\/p>\n

LIV Golf Indianapolis also took place over the weekend, and on Saturday, the iconic Bubba Watson had an altercation with a rather unruly fan.<\/p>\n

Watson was playing his round with Lee Westwood and Bryson DeChambeau at Chatham Hills when a fan screamed as Westwood was in his pre-shot routine.<\/p>\n

The Englishman had to step back and compose himself once more when his playing partner, Watson, took umbrage at the act. A clip that has surfaced online appears to show Watson exchanging words with the fan in an agitated manner.<\/p>\n

“Oh, you don’t want to say anything now? Say something, I’m looking at you, say it,” Watson said, before staring the person down and walking towards the green.<\/p>\n

LIV rookie makes history<\/p>\n

Watson, Westwood and DeChambeau were joined at LIV Indianapolis by HyFlyers GC rookie Michael La Sasso. And although many a star name graced the field, La Sasso came out on top.<\/p>\n

The American shot an incredible 60 in Round Two to launch him into contention, and although Jon Rahm was on his tail during the final day, he held on, becoming the youngest winner in LIV Golf history.<\/p>\n

As uncertainty lingered, with Saudi Arabia’s PIF no longer funding LIV beyond the season that concluded on Sunday, La Sasso was soaked in champagne by his team-mates.<\/p>\n
