Until April 2025, Collin Morikawa had only ever had one full-time caddie in his pro career – JJ Jakovac. And a look at his record shows why he was so faithful to the former professional golfer.<\/p>\n

With Jakovac alongside him, Morikawa won two Majors and multiple PGA Tour titles, while the pair were also together for two editions each of the Ryder Cup and the Presidents Cup.<\/p>\n

It wasn’t all plain sailing, though, with Morikawa suffering a dip in form that at one point saw him briefly drop out of the world’s top-20 in 2023.<\/p>\n

But, eventually, his class started to tell and a sixth PGA Tour title arrived later in the year at the Zozo Championship<\/a>.<\/p>\n

While Morikawa didn’t win in 2024, there were further strong showings, including – in his words – finishing top of the “fake leaderboard” of the Tour Championship<\/a>, even though Scottie Scheffler won the tournament thanks to his six-shot advantage over Morikawa at the start of the event.<\/p>\n

Morikawa started strongly in 2025, too, with runner-up at The Sentry and the Arnold Palmer Invitational, so it was a surprise when he and Jakovac parted ways, with Joe Greiner coming in as his immediate full-time replacement<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Later, Morikawa justified the move, explaining on Dan Rapaport’s ‘Dan On Golf Show’<\/a>: “Firstly, it doesn’t take anything away from what JJ and I have done over the last six years, but sometimes things just aren’t feeling right.<\/p>\n

“I think when people look at it in the macro perspective of ‘OK, Collin’s playing great, he’s contending, he’s trying to close out tournaments’. Even at the beginning of the year everything looked very, very good, but sometimes, on the golf course things just don’t feel right.”<\/p>\n

If Morikawa’s decision to end his and Jakovac’s six-year working relationship raised eyebrows, the American’s decision to move away from Max Homa’s former looper, Greiner, after only five tournaments together was, at first, baffling.<\/p>\n

That came after the 2025 Rocket Classic, with Morikawa justifying the move by saying: “I think people, they’re going to be surprised, but the way I put it is ‘just because two people are great at what they do doesn’t mean they’re going to be great together.'”<\/p>\n

While he searched for a full-time caddie, Morikawa hired former University of California teammate, K.K. Limbhasut, although with his Korn Ferry Tour career, that was only a short term fix.<\/p>\n

After another temporary caddie arrived in the form of Billy Foster, Morikawa eventually found the long-term answer to his problem – Mark Urbanek.<\/p>\n

Like many PGA Tour caddies, Urbanek had a promising amateur career, playing college golf at the College of William and Mary in Virginia.<\/p>\n

Urbanek’s breakthrough as a caddie came working with James Hahn. They had success too, with Hahn winning the 2015 Northern Trust with Urbanek’s help.<\/p>\n

Spells working with Matt Davidson and Charlie Wi followed, before he spent a a run of five years as Tony Finau’s caddie – a period where the American won five times on the PGA Tour.<\/p>\n

The last of those wins came in 2023, when Finau memorably beat Jon Rahm by three shots at the Mexico Open.<\/p>\n

The partnership came to an end two years later at The Open, which presented the opportuity for Morikawa and Urbanek to link up.<\/p>\n

There’s no doubt it has been a productive move, with Urbanek by his side as Morikawa won his first PGA Tour title since the 2023 Zozo Championship at the 2026 AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am<\/a>.<\/p>\n

More solid performances followed, despite Morikawa playing with a back injury, including fifth at the Arnold Palmer Invitational, T7 at The Masters and T4 at the RBC Heritage.<\/p>\n

After another excellent performance at another Signature Event, third at the Travelers Championship, Morikawa was then in contention for the Tour Championship at the halfway stage, just one back of the lead in pursuit of his first FedExCup triumph.<\/p>\n
