That’s because many of those jaunts include only one or two rounds, and I find that the hassle of toting along a heavy golf travel bag pales in comparison to the convenience of just using rental clubs at my destination. Honestly, the irons I’ve been using this year are not even fitted to my swing – so playing them on the road seems unappealing. Plus, as part of my job, I often visit nice courses that typically offer top-notch, latest-model loaners. On a recent trip, that habit changed my golf game in an instant.

When I arrived at this upscale resort, they handed me a set of clubs that included the latest PXG GEN8 0311P irons. I’ve used two previous sets of PXG irons over the years and found them to be outstanding. For some reason, I drifted away from them early last year — unusual because I’m very loyal to clubs once I find some I like. Regardless, these latest irons looked great.

For the next four rounds that week, I shot my best scores in a year and was absolutely crushing iron shots for the first time in 2026. Not only were they longer than the irons I’d been using at home by about 10 yards per club, but they were straighter with higher ball flight and felt purely solid. It’s what my game’s been missing.

So after I returned home, I arranged for a clubfitting session at my local PXG store. I’ve been through several PXG fittings before, and have constantly raved to friends that the brand’s fitters are far and away the most insightful I’ve dealt with in the industry. Even though they’re armed with state-of-the-art fitting tech, they have a knack of looking beyond the numbers. They listen to impact, observe how comfortable I look over the ball, and watch the fluidity of my swing. Then they make useful suggestions based on everything they’re seeing – all the time asking me how I feel about certain shaft-and-clubhead combinations. Trust me, this process seeps well beyond the norm.

And in this case, the fitter landed on what I believe will be the perfect irons to complement the rest of my bag. The tech behind the GEN8 0311P irons includes dual perimeter weighting that helps dial in shot-shape changes without altering lie or loft. This enhances forgiveness and control. An internal polymer maximizes energy transfer and dampens vibration – making shots feel soft and powerful, while soaring high and tight. They’re essentially game-improvement irons that look more like player’s irons – with minimal offset and a thin top line. The GEN8 line is also offered in a longer-blade 0311XP model that’s geared towards players who may have lost a little distance, and the 0311T tour-style club with some forgiveness built in.

I already can’t wait for my next round. Who knows? I may even take them on my next trip.

This iron has changed everything.
