WASHINGTON (DC News Now<\/a>) — Golfers are bracing for the possible closure of the East Potomac Golf Links on Tuesday, September 1, the day President Trump has said major renovations are set to begin.<\/p>\n

“If it is, I’d be sad,” said Austin Laws, a golfer out on one of the courses Sunday.<\/p>\n

The U.S. Department of the Interior released a design of the new single 18-hole course in May. The president hopes it will host major championships, including the U.S. Open. Mixed reaction from golfers regarding those plans. But there is agreement among.<\/p>\n

“This is affordable, and it’s important for people to have an affordable course,” said Ian McCutcheon.<\/p>\n

Interior Secretary Doug Burgum has said that’s what the course will offer people. Still, there are other concerns.<\/p>\n

“I hope it remains as publicly accessible as possible,” said Chris Fisher. “I think that’s what makes it such a special area is that, it’s really for all of D.C., not just D.C. folks out in Maryland, in Virginia.”<\/p>\n

Dozens of trees have been removed along the west side of the course, a concern of opponents of the project. But, DC News has been told those trees are considered either dying or are an invasive species.<\/p>\n

Plus, the Department of the Interior awarded a $349,000 contract to Ross Tree Expert Company<\/a> of Falls Church, Va, for tree and stump removal, and pruning work at the course through early October.<\/p>\n

There’s been no word from the Trump administration on how much the project will cost or take to complete. Meanwhile, federal lawsuits seek to block the renovations.<\/p>\n
