Only one golfer in the final three groups shot under par on Sunday at the 2026 Tour Championship. It was Scottie Scheffler, who carded a 4-under 66, tied for the low round of the day. He entered the final round three shots behind Viktor Hovland and left Atlanta with a three-shot victory<\/a>, his second career win at East Lake.<\/p>\n

That a Sunday like Scheffler\u2019s doesn\u2019t faze anyone anymore is a testament to the greatness of the world No. 1, a player whose best golf makes everyone else\u2019s look pedestrian.<\/p>\n

Much has been said and written about Scheffler after each of his 22 PGA Tour wins, though over time very little of it is new. He is inevitable. He is patient. He takes aggressive swings at conservative targets. He isn\u2019t defined by his scores. What else is there to say?<\/p>\n

But in comments that both opened and bookended his week at East Lake, another facet of Scheffler\u2019s brilliance \u2014 and his values \u2014 revealed itself in plain sight: his passion for doing the work.<\/p>\n

\u201cOne thing I’m most proud of is my consistency week in and week out,\u201d he said on Wednesday. \u201cIt’s not easy to show up every single week and play the way that I play and play with the intensity that I play with and that I bring to each and every tournament\u2026If I’m showing up for a tournament, I’m not showing up for any other reason other than to do my best and give myself a chance to win that golf tournament\u2026I think that’s something for me is underrated at times. It’s not as simple as playing smart or playing conservatively. It’s about, I think, bringing intensity to each and every week that I play, and it’s something that I’m very proud of.\u201d<\/p>\n

The comments are particularly amusing to read alongside those from Rory McIlroy after his round on Saturday.<\/p>\n

\u201cI think once you start to lose your enthusiasm to go to the course, it’s time to take a break,\u201d McIlroy said. \u201cLook, I’ve turned up to events that I haven’t necessarily wanted to be there because I feel like I should be there\u2026if I’m going to show up to a tournament, I want to perform at my best and play my best, and there have been times when I haven’t done that\u2026 Again, I’m 37. I’ve been at this, this is my 18th or 19th year as a pro. Maybe my fuse is a little shorter than it used to be.\u201d<\/p>\n

Ten years from now, Scheffler will very likely have a different level of enthusiasm when he shows up to run-of-the-mill PGA Tour events. I doubt he will roll into Memphis in Year 18 with the same fervor he does today. But at least for now, his ability to show up to every tournament with a full tank, remain mentally engaged while thousands of fans shout for his attention, and still grind over every shot is one of his finest virtues.<\/p>\n

Scheffler wins so routinely and nonchalantly that very little from this year\u2019s Tour Championship victory will be especially memorable years down the line. His iron into No. 2<\/a> was outrageous, but nothing we haven\u2019t seen him do dozens of times before. He steadily climbed the leaderboard while everyone\u2019s weaknesses caught up to them, then tapped in on Sunday evening for another drama-free winner\u2019s check, as he often does.<\/p>\n

One scene from Sunday evening, however, will remain with me.<\/p>\n

From the set of Live From after his win, Scheffler grabbed Brandel Chamblee\u2019s notebook \u2014 pages and pages full of meticulous notes \u2014 and held it up to the camera with a smile.<\/p>\n

\u201cBy the way, I love the people that work really hard,\u201d Scheffler said, interrupting his own answer about the tournament. \u201cSo your notes like this, I truly appreciate something like that. This is a lot of work.\u201d<\/p>\n

It was a small moment, but a revealing window into the mind and character of the greatest golfer of his generation.<\/p>\n

With the win, his third of the season, Scheffler also all but locked up Player of the Year honors. At least in my opinion, the award is his. Scheffler recorded 13 top-five finishes in 20 starts this season, more than double any other player. He also finished the season with five runner-up finishes; Si Woo Kim and Ryan Gerard tied for second with three apiece.<\/p>\n

If you think someone like U.S. Open champion Wyndham Clark deserves the award because you assign much more weight to major championships, fair enough. But for what it\u2019s worth, Scheffler still recorded three top-five finishes in majors this year. Nobody else had more than two (Cameron Young and Sam Burns).<\/p>\n

With as many wins as anybody this season, and the overwhelming totality of his r\u00e9sum\u00e9, Scheffler should be on his way to a fifth consecutive Player of the Year, a well-deserved reward after another season of doing the work.<\/p>\n

Tour Championship Cleanup<\/p>\n

In other Tour Championship results, Viktor Hovland finished second after entering Sunday with the lead and contending throughout most of the day. After the tournament, Hovland was asked if he is amazed by Scheffler\u2019s performances.<\/p>\n

\u201cI wouldn’t say amazed,\u201d he replied. \u201cHe’s just good, and he played good every day. I could have shot 66 easily as well today, just didn’t have it.\u201d<\/p>\n

His comments were reminiscent of what he told me<\/a> at Royal Portrush, that Scottie is \u201cvery beatable,\u201d but nobody is pushing him. Few of Scheffler\u2019s peers describe him that way. I like that Hovland does.<\/p>\n

Also playing in the final pairing, Ryan Gerard made one last appeal to Presidents Cup captain Brandt Snedeker. He shot a 2-over 72 in the final round to finish solo third, his seventh top 10 of the year and a solid capstone to an impressive third season on the PGA Tour.<\/p>\n

Despite what the Presidents Cup standings, which has its fair share of flaws, may suggest, there are not 12 better American golfers right now than Gerard. On Tuesday evening, we will find out if Snedeker agrees.
