Scottie Scheffler closed with a 66 to win the 2026 Tour Championship at 16-under, beating Viktor Hovland by three and taking his second FedExCup in three years.<\/p>\n

Scottie Scheffler<\/a> spent most of 2026 winning the week without winning the tournament. On Sunday at East Lake, he won both.<\/p>\n

Scheffler closed with a 4-under 66 to finish 16-under at the Tour Championship, three shots clear of Viktor Hovland<\/a> (13-under) and four ahead of Ryan Gerard<\/a>. The $10 million first prize capped his second FedExCup title in three seasons. He is now the third player, after Tiger Woods<\/a> and Rory McIlroy<\/a>, to win the Cup more than once.<\/p>\n

It is his 22nd PGA Tour victory<\/a> and his third win of the year, two of them in the last three playoff events after he opened the postseason at the FedEx St. Jude Championship.<\/p>\n

He started Sunday three behind Hovland. The course, he said, finally asked a harder question.<\/p>\n

\u201cGolf course changed a little bit today. The pins were in some really tough spots, and we got a little bit of wind, which I think made things challenging for the guys,\u201d Scheffler said. \u201cI was able to get off to a really good start. Made a nice par on 1, great shot into 2, and then a really nice putt there on 4. I made mistakes, I\u2019d say, on 6 and 7, but after that I played some really solid golf, and I was able to finish the tournament off.\u201d<\/p>\n

The par at No. 1 mattered. The 5-iron at No. 2 mattered more.<\/p>\n

Into a pin tucked behind a swale, Scheffler said he had no idea where the ball would finish until the crowd told him. In a practice round, a similar shot had landed on the downslope and run over the green. Sunday he stuffed it.<\/p>\n

\u201cToday all you could do is execute the shot and see what happens after that,\u201d he said. \u201cI executed the shot the way I wanted to. \u2026 To stuff one in there on the 2nd hole the way I did on a difficult par-3 is really important, kind of giving momentum to the rest of the round.\u201d<\/p>\n

Then East Lake tried to take it back. At No. 7, a back-left pin and a wind that didn\u2019t do what it was supposed to sent his approach into the wrong side of a bunker \u2014 \u201cvirtually no chance,\u201d he said. Bogey. Caddie Ted Scott talked him down the way he had after a shanked bunker shot on No. 8 at this tournament a couple of years ago. Scheffler birdied the next hole.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt was a frustrating moment, but I think sometimes that\u2019s why it\u2019s important for me to get out and be able to voice that to Ted,\u201d Scheffler said. \u201cI feel like Ted for me on the course is a lot more than just a caddie, someone giving me numbers. He\u2019s really in those moments with me. \u2026 He\u2019s a tremendous asset as a friend and as a partner out there on the course.\u201d<\/p>\n

Hovland, the 2023 champion, faded with a closing 72. Scheffler was still trying to birdie 18 until he saw the board. He laid up from the right rough; he and Scott had tried to go for it from the same spot in a practice round and found the water, then hit a hanging-lie wedge into the wind to a left pin. While he was reading the putt, Hovland bogeyed 17.<\/p>\n

\u201cMade my putt a little bit more defensive than I think it would have been if he had parred 17 or even birdied 17,\u201d Scheffler said. \u201cThree shots on 18 is a lot different than two.\u201d<\/p>\n

This FedExCup is the one he wanted to be able to own without an asterisk. He won here in 2024 under starting strokes. Collin Morikawa<\/a> beat him on the golf course that week. It still bothers him.<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019m glad we changed the format,\u201d Scheffler said. \u201cDo I think it\u2019s perfect by any means? No. But I think having a real tournament to finish the year where I am the winner and the lowest score at East Lake feels like a bit more of an accomplishment than being like, well, it\u2019s kind of a silly format. He didn\u2019t win, but he won.\u201d<\/p>\n

The regular season left him with fewer trophies than the years that looked the same on paper. He called that the point of his playoff run.<\/p>\n

\u201cI felt like maybe I\u2019ve underperformed in some of the postseasons in the past,\u201d he said, pointing to 2022 and 2023, when he had the lead at East Lake and didn\u2019t win the Cup. \u201cTo come in this year maybe not winning the tournaments that I could have won throughout the regular season, to come in and win 2 out of 3 playoff events is definitely a nice way to finish off the season.\u201d<\/p>\n

He still talked like a man who treats second place as a wound. He said finishing second \u201churts a lot more than winning.\u201d He said golf is \u201can endless puzzle.\u201d He said the first 10 minutes of the indoor bike is the worst part of the job. He said he does not take days off, and that is both the gift and the grind of staying No. 1.<\/p>\n

\u201cI want to be able to tell myself when I hang it up that I did everything I could,\u201d Scheffler said. \u201cI feel like years like this kind of show that to myself.\u201d<\/p>\n

Off the course, the season ended the way a season should. He grabbed a beer at the first open bar he saw, the first in a long time. His wife and his manager noticed. Dinner, he said, would be a cheeseburger, fries, maybe a milkshake.<\/p>\n

\u201cWell, season\u2019s over now,\u201d Scheffler said. \u201cI\u2019m going to have a beer. Well-earned beer.\u201d<\/p>\n
