The golf season kicked off on Tuesday, Sept. 1, for the Lady Spartans as they opened the new year at the Emporia Municipal Golf Course. Despite the intense heat, they put together a solid outing on the green with a seventh-place finish as a team and had some good individual showings.<\/p>\n
As a team, the Lady Spartans had a score of 419, which was 11 behind Shawnee Heights for sixth place. Baldwin was the leading team with a score of 332 and had a first-place golfer in Peyton Wright.<\/p>\n
\u201cAll things considered, everything went really well. Our practices have been impacted all year by the heat and at this point we are pretty well acclimated to it. We owe a big thank you to everyone at the course for allowing us to use golf carts for this tournament, which did a lot to keep everyone moving and out of the heat,\u201d Head Coach Caleb Short said. \u201cAs for how we played I was very happy with the scores that came in. Everyone shot a number that I think they should be proud of and had highlights in their round for us to build off of.\u201d<\/p>\n
Leading the charge for the Lady Spartans, however, was Taylen Koch, who had a good day on the greens with a round of 88, good for 12th place. She just missed a top-ten finish by two strokes, but it was a great start to the season for her.<\/p>\n
\u201cTaylen is a good player who should compete for medals throughout the year, and she showed that yesterday. She did a great job of battling back after a tough start. I would say the same of all our girls,\u201d Short said. \u201cKelsey started slow but played a really nice back 9, then Jaycie, Sofia, and Jennifer all shot their best-ever rounds in a tournament. It was a great day for us out there.\u201d<\/p>\n
Kelsey Shull had a solid outing as well, with a score of 106, which put her in a tie for 25th place. Sofia Henning placed 32nd after shooting 110 on the day, while Jennifer Bacon finished in 35th shooting 115. Rounding out the results for the Lady Spartans was a 38th-place finish from Jaycie Joplin after shooting 134 on the day.<\/p>\n
It was a solid start for the Lady Spartans golf season, and they will look to carry the positives from the home opening invitational into their next meet in Salina Central. They will travel there on Sept. 8 and look to build off a good start to the season.<\/p>\n
