MYRTLE BEACH, SC (WMBF) – A major sporting event is bringing a significant financial boost to businesses along the Grand Strand.<\/p>\n
The Myrtle Beach World Amateur Handicap Championship is underway this week, drawing thousands of visitors to the area. <\/p>\n
Organizers say about 3,000 players representing all 50 states and over 20 countries have traveled to the Grand Strand to compete on more than 50 local golf courses.<\/p>\n
Golf courses and businesses say the influx of players and their families provides a massive economic boost just as the peak summer tourism season winds down.<\/p>\n
\u201cIt\u2019s definitely good,\u201d Shawn Burns, head golf professional at Myrtlewood Golf Club, said. \u201cI mean, obviously huge for retail and then also just the golf itself definitely gives us a little boost that we need\u201d<\/p>\n
For many business owners, the timing of the tournament is critical. Late August and early September typically mark a slow transition period for coastal tourism, making the tournament\u2019s timing highly beneficial.<\/p>\n
\u201cKind of awesome to end the season with a bang, kind of have everyone come out and have a good time,\u201d Burns said.<\/p>\n
The tournament runs through Friday, culminating in a championship round where multiple champions will be crowned.<\/p>\n
